We Are The Durhams exhibition will open at The Light Durham from 22 August🎨

Discover the stories of The Durhams through a powerful new permanent free to visit exhibition that explores the history, people and legacy of the Durham Light Infantry from 1758 to the present day.

From personal letters and treasured keepsakes to remarkable photographs and interactive displays, the exhibition shines a light on the experiences of soldiers, their families and the communities they called home.

Whether you're a history enthusiast, have a connection to the armed forces, or simply want to learn more about County Durham's heritage, this exhibition is not to be missed.

We enjoyed a lovely morning at South Shields town hall at the invitation of the Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside.

Mayor Cllr Stan Wildhirt sent out an open invitation to veterans in South Tyneside to attend a free breakfast while enjoying some great banter. The Mayor and Mayoress were very welcoming to all who attended.

We would like to say a huge thank you for a very enjoyable morning.

Veterans from across South Tyneside are invited to attend a relaxed and friendly Veterans' Breakfast at South Shields Town Hall on Saturday 18 July, from 9.30am–11am.

Enjoy a freshly prepared breakfast, including sausage and bacon sandwiches with hash browns. Catch up with fellow veterans and make new connections in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

South Tyneside’s Armed Forces Day sees thousands raised for veteran’s charities

We were absolutely blown away today by the generosity of Bad Landers MCC who chose us as a charity to be a beneficiary of theirs. A huge donation of £1500 was accepted by our Chairman Joe and Vice Chair Barry, this will make an unbelievable difference to our veterans. Thank you so much!

What an honour to receive a letter from the Secretary of State for Defence on Armed Forced Day presented by our MP Emma Lewell MP to mark the work we do at NAAFI Break at Action Station South Tyneside
We waited to share this today with our regular attendees as this letter honours them as they are the reason NAAFI Break is still here after a decade.

South Tyneside Armed Forces Day 2026.

What a fabulous day of celebrating our Armed Forces. It was great to see all the cadet services on parade along with local veterans.

The weather brought the crowds in abundance. We chatted with so many serving, reservists and veterans, as well as family members. We hope to see lots of you again in the future. We would like to THANK YOU ALL for your service.

Our day had not long started when MP Emma Lewell arrived at our stall and handed us an envelope. Inside was a letter which we will share with you all later once we have shown our regular attendees. It’s only fair as it is for them as well.

We then received even more good news, which we’re not sure we can share just yet as we forgot to ask. I’m sure that news will be able to be announced very soon.

All of the stalls looked like they were very busy and we hope you all had a great day. It is so great to see the borough come together to celebrate this day. For those who will be attending next week’s national Armed Forces Day and hosting stalls again we wish you a great day and hope the weather is kind to you all.
