“I couldn’t cope.”

When Lisa first contacted Sense Ability Matters, she was overwhelmed by the effects of sight loss on her everyday life. Even familiar surroundings became difficult to navigate, and her confidence to leave the house was fading. Through our Enablement Service, we listened and together, we found solutions.

Anti-glare glasses to improve visibility
Hand magnifiers for reading
An anti-glare app to reduce phone screen strain
Support with her PIP application
And the encouragement to try new things, like our vision-impaired exercise classes

Lisa told us the difference was life-changing - “I feel like I’m finally starting to be myself again.”

She’s more confident, connected, and able to manage her day with independence and pride.

The St Gregory’s Dementia Friends session had a surprise dress code this week… eye patches! 👁️🏴‍☠️
To welcome Gary back after his eye operation, the attendees decided to show their support in the most memorable way possible — by wearing eye patches themselves! 😂
There were plenty of laughs, lots of pirate jokes, and enough “Ahoy matey!” comments to last us until Christmas. ⚓
A brilliant reminder that friendship, kindness, and a good sense of humour make every session special. Welcome back, Gary! ❤️

There are still places available for these sessions starting 2nd June.
They are a great opportunity to meet and share with other carers, while also supporting you with challenges you may be facing in your own caring role.

Do you regularly support someone you care about? A partner, child, other family member, friend or neighbour?

You might be helping with day to day tasks, emotional support, appointments, or simply being “the one they rely on”. If that sounds like you, this Managing Your Caring Role course is for you.

📅Starting Tuesday 2nd June, 10am–12pm at South Tyneside Care Academy, Jarrow
Running every Tuesday for four weeks

You’ll get support with:
• Understanding your caring role (even if you don’t see yourself as a “carer”)
• Coping strategies for everyday challenges
• Managing stress and protecting your wellbeing
• Setting boundaries and saying no
• Knowing where to get help and support
• Simple, practical wellbeing tools
• Sharing and learning with others in similar situations

Many people don’t realise they are unpaid carers – this course can help you explore that at your own pace.
