Thursday the 28th May was a Civvies Parade due to the intense weather conditions led by CI Watkins using his Bushcraft skills, particularly on hydration and the importance of water, very relevant to the current circumstances!

The session started with an explanation of why water is important, followed by a few sobering facts about water cleanliness worldwide. The varouus water borne diseases were identified as were their symptoms.

A discussed then took place on safe water sourcing when in nature which led into the different ways we can source and sanitise water for safe consumption, starting with the British Army water bottle and Oasis sterilisation tablets.

Next was the classic Millbank bag, where he showed how a bottle of very dirty water can be filtered into a Crusader cup ready for boiling to make it safe.

Finally teams of cadets made their own water filters using ‘found materials’ — sand, stones, grasses and some cotton, all carefully layered in a drinks bottle cut in half. The team with the cleanest water won an imaginary prize!

Everyone enjoyed the evening and learned so much about safe water consumption and how it doesn’t always come in a convenient bottle ready to drink!

On Monday the 25th May Cadets and Staff from 2028 Squadron joined others at the Annual Southam Family Fun Day. The day was an exceptional weather day so the Event OC, allowed uniform to be correct but relaxed with plenty of water available and more time than usual spent under cover at the Squadron Recruiting Marquee.

Our Cadets and Staff rotated through the Marquee spending a few hours on duty and then either going home or changing and taking a look at the events. As always the Fun Day was well attended but with the exceptional heat it was clear families were popping in for a time and then.returning home to the shade.

Once again we placed the blue footprint in Southam but on this occasion we took details of potential Cadets and Staff in readiness for returning to our Squadron HQ. Well done to everyone for helping.

Thursday the 21st May 2026 was down as an NCO led evening. Everyone paraded in civvies so interactive games and challenges could be set up. After first parade, the Uniformed Staff held a meeting to look at the future, leaving the Cadet NCOs and Civilian Instructors to run the evening.

Photographs are in short supply but from the reaction and general atmosphere it’s clear everyone present enjoyed the Parade!

On Monday the 18th May, we once again paraded at our temporary location but attempted to provide the best experience for our Cadets. Those on parade enjoyed briefings on Leadership and Development, whilst a number of the NCOs had the opportunity to give presentations as part of their Methods of Instruction journey to being able to teach. A successful evening using what facilities were available.

The OC Flight Lieutenant Moreton, took the opportunity to discuss future promotions with two of our Corporals.

Once again our thanks to Galanos House for accommodating us and giving us access to their IT Equipment.

Thursday evening was a varied and successful Parade but the numbers were still disappointing even taking current GCSE exams into consideration.

The parade started with presentations by the OC Flight Lieutenant Moreton, of First Class Badges, Radio and Blue D of E Awards.

There followed a Talk by a serving RAF Sergeant from Brize Norton. Sgt McCormick is an Avionics Engineer by trade but he gave an interesting resume on his career with plenty of opportunity for our Cadets to ask questions on his time in the Royal Air Force and current recruiting possibilities. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed his presentation.

After break two of our NCOs gave a presentation on Uniform preparation and the various styles we wear according to the activity. It was a really confident talk inviting the Cadets to improve their uniform care and above all, attention to detail with their shoes, shirts, trousers/skirts etc.

So all in all a great evening for those who attended the parade, both informative, inspirational and once again a demonstration of teamwork and collective responsibility.

The last day of April (Thursday) the Squadron continued to parade at the alternative location, Galanos House, Southam. Unfortunately the numbers fell dramatically to the lowest number this year for various declared reasons by our Cadets.
However, training continued with the First Class group completing their syllabus, a second group went through radio procedure and a session of Drill took place under the guidance of our two Adult SNOs for the Junior Cadets.

It was a successful parade with everyone fully engaged.
