Thursday the 28th May was a Civvies Parade due to the intense weather conditions led by CI Watkins using his Bushcraft skills, particularly on hydration and the importance of water, very relevant to the current circumstances!
The session started with an explanation of why water is important, followed by a few sobering facts about water cleanliness worldwide. The varouus water borne diseases were identified as were their symptoms.
A discussed then took place on safe water sourcing when in nature which led into the different ways we can source and sanitise water for safe consumption, starting with the British Army water bottle and Oasis sterilisation tablets.
Next was the classic Millbank bag, where he showed how a bottle of very dirty water can be filtered into a Crusader cup ready for boiling to make it safe.
Finally teams of cadets made their own water filters using ‘found materials’ — sand, stones, grasses and some cotton, all carefully layered in a drinks bottle cut in half. The team with the cleanest water won an imaginary prize!
Everyone enjoyed the evening and learned so much about safe water consumption and how it doesn’t always come in a convenient bottle ready to drink!
