We’re all guilty of indulging in chocolate, sweets and crackers over the festive period and it’s estimated that OVER 100 MILLION plastic tubs are sold in the UK each year, with over 40% of these at Christmas.

Southampton will be moving to the Tier 4 'Stay at Home' COVID-19 alert level from one minute past midnight on Boxing Day, Saturday 26 December.

Councillor Christopher Hammond, Leader of Southampton City Council, said: “We’re all feeling deflated after the good news about the vaccine. We need to remember that there is light at the end of the tunnel, however fed-up we’re feeling at the government’s new restrictions.

"This will be the third time Southampton has been put under strict COVID-19 regulations and I don’t underestimate for a second how difficult this will feel for everyone.

"Southampton is a city of can-do small business owners. Many of them will be wondering if this is the final hammer blow to their livelihoods and aspirations and I would urge everyone to support their local businesses by shopping online with them wherever possible over the coming weeks.

"Our job of protecting the city is not done and until it is, we will stay on the frontline. This year, despite all our difficulties we’ve seen the best of the city, and I’m sure the spirit of Southampton will get us through this.”

🚫🚙♻️📲 From 1 August Hampshire County Council are introducing a vehicle registration system for all of their Household Waste & Recycling Centres (HWRC). 🚫🚙♻️📲

Hampshire residents, including Southampton, will need to sign up to an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system to continue to dispose of waste for free and not pay a £5 entry charge at their HWRCs. Sign up here: https://www.hants.gov.uk/vehicle-registration-hwrc

The Millbrook HWRC will not be included in the registration system and will not charge for entry, helping to encourage residents in the city to recycle as much as possible. Southampton residents who use any HWRC other than the Millbrook site will need to sign up to the ANPR scheme to continue to have free access to the HCC sites. Our glass collection is back! Starting 4th May.

♻️♻️✅📣 We're pleased to announce that the kerbside glass collection service will re-start on Monday 4 May.

Alongside this, the city's Bulky Waste Collection service will also be reintroduced, with the online payment and booking system being re-enabled from 4 May 2020 with collections starting again on Monday 11 May 2020. 🛋🛏

The services were suspended as part of the lockdown measures that have been undertaken by Local Authorities to safeguard staff and residents, and to help prioritise the delivery of services against any issues of staff sickness and self-isolation.

Residents who have stored a large amount of glass items are asked not to overload bins or crates and to stagger the collection of their backlog over a few collection dates. It is not safe for operatives to collect glass items that are not stored in a bin or crate.

It is possible to dispose of glass jars and bottles at one of the city’s many glass recycling banks, but only as part of an essential journey.
