📮 Southampton needs a new city centre Post Office! Could your business help? 📮
Our Post Office is more than just a place to buy a stamp. For many people in Southampton, it is a mainstay of our high streets providing critical services to all.
With TG Jones (formerly WH Smith) on Above Bar due to close on 22 September 2026, we are facing the loss of a vital Post Office in the heart of our city centre. That’s why Labour Councillors Sarah Bogle and Ginnie Lambert are working with local MP Darren Paffey to encourage local businesses to step forward and explore taking on a Post Office Main Branch.
⏰ With the deadline for applications being 18 August 2026, time is running out to have a post office in the city centre.
Could you be the local business that helps keep this essential service in the heart of Southampton?
Perhaps you already run a shop, convenience store, newsagent, pharmacy or another established city-centre business. If you have been thinking about expanding your services, this could be a fantastic opportunity to become an important part of the future of Southampton’s city centre.
Regarding the closure's impact on Bargate residents, Cllr Ginnie Lambert said:
“Many of our residents have no access to a car and will now have to travel much further, with the closest Post Office now in London Road. This will be very inconvenient and a major blow to our main shopping area in the city centre.”
Echoing Cllr Lambert's concerns, Darren Paffey MP said:
“The number of post offices has already reduced in the city and other areas like Sholing and Thornhill are also facing the same threat, just as St Mary’s did several years ago. I understand that the Post Office is keen to act quickly to protect services in these areas, so I hope that some local businesses might be interested in putting themselves forward.”
👉 Could you be the answer?
We are urging local businesses, entrepreneurs and community-minded business owners to find out more about the opportunity and put themselves forward.
This is a chance to:
📮 Help protect an essential local service
