The Coastal State Forum saw a number of highly engaging topics in its seventh year at the REG Conference.

A major aspect was search and rescue, with discussions including long-term sustainability in training and exercising, as well as developments of the Women in Search and Rescue scheme.

On day two of the REG Conference the focus turned to education and training within the maritime sector. During the Capacity Building Working Group there was consideration of potential new training initiatives and identifying the gaps as new technologies develop.

St Helena promoted their training initiative for a remote island which is totally reliant on shipping.

Wendy Benjamin, Education Consultant in St. Helena said: “Changes in the means of transportation to and from St. Helena has reduced opportunities and aspirations to pursue a career in maritime.

“The aim of the Capacity Building Working Group is to motivate, encourage and inspire young people to pursue a career in maritime while giving them the pathways and support to achieving their goals. This work is essential for ensuring sustainability in the maritime industry.”
