🧬 Your genome holds the instructions for life - but it can also help transform how we understand and treat disease.

Sarah Ennis, a Professor of Genomics at the University of Southampton and University Hospital Southampton, is bringing together complex genomic and clinical data to uncover patterns that would otherwise remain hidden.

This can become the first step in enabling the development of personalised treatments 💙

UHS patient Marisa is taking part in the Pets As Therapy Walk This May campaign, raising funds to help bring more therapy dog visits to people across the UK 🐾

Instead of walking 100km outdoors, Marisa is completing one wheelchair lap of the hospital grounds every day throughout May.

Currently staying in hospital with complex medical needs and autism, Marisa says the weekly visits from PAT dog Kimmy and her owner Roger have become a vital source of comfort, stability and emotional support 🐶

Labrador Retriever Kimmy has supported Marisa during seizures and periods of sensory overload, helping her feel calmer in challenging moments.

“Kimmy hasn’t just been a nice extra during my admission – she’s been a source of safety, regulation and consistency,” says Marisa.

👏 Please join us in cheering on Marisa.

With hot weather continuing this week, don’t forget to stay hydrated 💧

Babies, young children and older adults are especially at risk of dehydration.

If left untreated it can quickly become serious — so keep sipping water and check in on those around you.

A reminder over the bank holiday weekend that our Emergency Department is there is for patients with life threatening injury or illness. If you need medical help but it's not urgent, please consider other medical services such as your local pharmacy, GP or use NHS 111 online for further advice.

For urgent but non-life-threatening care, there are Urgent Treatment Centres at Royal South Hants Hospital or Lymington New Forest Hospital.

🎉 Celebrating our midwifery preceptees! 🎉

This week, we celebrate our latest group of midwives who have completed their preceptorship programme. A huge milestone in their professional journey.

Preceptorship at UHS provides newly registered practitioners with guidance, support and development, helping them build confidence and become autonomous professionals.

Our midwifery team plays a key role in this journey, and we were proud to see this cohort presented with their certificates by our director of midwifery, Emma Northover at the event.

A big thank you to all our preceptees and the teams across the Trust who support them. Your dedication makes a difference to both our patients and each other.

👇 Leave a comment to congratulate them!

The UK Health Security Agency has issued an amber heat health alert for parts of England until 5pm on Wednesday 27 May.

Most of us like to get out and enjoy the sunshine, but ending up in our Emergency Department suffering from the effects of heat is the last place you’ll want to be.

Beat the heat:
🥤Keep hydrated with plenty of cold drinks throughout the day
🧴👒👕Wear sunscreen, a hat and light, breathable clothes outside
🏠🌳Stay indoors in a cool space, or in the shade if you’re outdoors, during the hottest part of the day (11am–3pm)

And don’t forget to check in with older and vulnerable people to make sure they are keeping cool and staying hydrated.

One in three people born in the UK today will develop dementia.

This week is Dementia Action Week, an awareness campaign led by the Alzheimer's Society, bringing people and organisations together to act on dementia.

We are proud to be a site in the UK Dementia Trials Network (UKDTN), a nationwide partnership that brings together researchers, clinicians and volunteers to make it faster and easier to run high‑quality clinical trials for dementia treatments.

We were also the first place in the UK to recruit a dedicated UKDTN senior research nurse.

Inês Rodrigues shares what motivates her to work in dementia research 💙

People living with severe asthma often face more than just breathing difficulties.

A new study involving experts at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, the University of Southampton and NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre has found that many patients are also managing multiple other long-term health conditions - highlighting the complexity of care they need.

This important research, featured today in The Independent, shines a light on how a more personalised, whole-person approach to treatment could be so vital, helping to improve outcomes and quality of life for those affected.

🎉 Happy International HR Day! 🎉

Today we’re shining a light on our incredible HR teams at University Hospital Southampton and the impact they have across the whole organisation.

HR (Human Resources) is all about supporting people throughout their working lives. That can mean helping someone land their first role, supporting managers and teams, guiding career development, or ensuring staff feel safe, valued, and supported every day.

At UHS, our HR teams span a wide range of roles, including Medical HR, Talent Aqusition and play a vital part in keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes.

✨ We’re also celebrating the journey of Beckii, one of our Medical HR Team Leaders. Starting as an apprentice, Beckii has grown her career through learning, determination, and the support available at UHS . A great example of the opportunities on offer here.
