Lucy's is Beartown by Fredrik Backman, our current Author of the Month!

Beartown is a fading town deep in the Swedish forest, held together by snow, darkness and its legendary youth hockey team. A bright future finally seems possible until one brutal act tears the community in two (please look up trigger warnings if interested).

Lucy knew early on that this book was going to be a heartstring tugger. Even though she went in knowing almost nothing and caring even less about hockey. What surprised her was how quickly Backman made the sport feel vital to the town's identity. The characters feel shaped by their environment, and the way their lives overlap makes Beartown feel completely real.

At its core, this is a book about the consequences of generational misogyny, toxic masculinity, and sexism. Lucy appreciated how tactfully Backman handles these themes. Rather than centring the narrative on the act itself, the focus stays on its impact: on the girl (and her family) at the centre of it all, and on how her life is altered in ways both immediate and long-lasting.

This is an informal book group where you can talk about what you've been reading for the past month and listen to other book lovers in what they've been enjoying. Bookabout is a fantastic way of hearing about - and even trying - books you may not have thought about giving a go!

Bookabout is hosted on the last Thursday of every month.

Hitchhiker, grab your towel and don't panic!

Today is Towel Day, a day dedicated to Douglas Adams, the author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, for fans to demonstrate their admiration for both Adams and the franchise itself. We have many of Adams' work available in our library and throughout the Hampshire Libraries catalogue.

And as we all know: A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. So don't forget to take your towel with you wherever you go today on this spring bank holiday Monday!
