National Oceanography Centre

National Oceanography Centre By gaining a deeper knowledge of the ocean, we help every living thing on our planet flourish. 🌊

The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) undertakes integrated ocean research and technology development from the coast to the deep ocean. It provides long-term marine science capability including: major facilities; sustained ocean observing, mapping and survey; data management, and scientific advice. The National Oceanography Centre is an independent self-governing organisation - a charitable compa

ny limited by guarantee. The NOC is funded by UK Research and Innovation to work on National Capability programmes, and manages on its behalf, the National Marine Equipment Pool - Europe’s largest fleet of autonomous and robotic vehicles, and two state of the art research ships RRS Discovery and RRS James Cook. The NOC has two sites, Southampton and Liverpool, and employs around 650 staff. We are co-located at both sites with leading UK Universities, giving us a unique position in UK marine research.

🌡️ Heatwave here…but not everywhere!

While many of us in the UK were experiencing rising temperatures this past week, crews aboard RRS Discovery and RRS James Cook were seeing two very different worlds at sea:

☀️ Warm conditions in the Atlantic near the UK and Ireland
🧊 Sea ice and cold temperatures in the Labrador Sea

It’s a great reminder of just how diverse and dynamic our ocean really is.

Liverpool, you're invited to an ocean party set in 2050! 🪩🌊🔮

Inspired by the research of NOC scientist Dr Marta Payo Payo, 'Fish in a Kettle' is a choose-you-own-adventure style theatre perfomance in celebration of World Ocean Day 2026.

Moving through the interactive performance, you'll encounter different possible futures through fragments of the Ocean’s life. No two journeys are the same.

This strange and playful experience floats between theatre, scientific research, the voices of Merseyside, as well as our darkest imaginings and most hopeful dreams! 👀

The performance will be followed by a Q&A with the theatre makers@LabRatsCollective and Dr Marta Payo Payo!

🌡️ Marine heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense, with the number of events doubling over the past 40 years. 🌊

Scientists and researchers from across the UK and Ireland came together at our Southampton site this week to share the latest research on forecasting, monitoring, impacts, and risks associated with marine heatwaves.

From climate projections and integrated monitoring to aquaculture impacts and seagrass restoration, the breadth of interdisciplinary work highlighted both the scale of the challenge and the importance of collaboration across the scientific community.

This meeting was important step forward in strengthening coordination, identifying evidence gaps, and improving our understanding of how marine heatwaves affect ecosystems, industries, and coastal communities.

Dr Zoe Jacobs , whose research focuses on understanding the dynamics and impacts of marine heatwaves, who led the event in Southampton adds "The event enabled new opportunities for collaboration and helped the scientific community identify the critical evidence gaps we need to address to better understand and evaluate the impacts of marine heatwaves."
