For many of our staff, sharing a passion for discovery with the next generation is one of the most rewarding parts of the job. ✨
It can also be the most challenging part - especially for employees who have seagoing duties taking them away from home.

Thanks to Dr Michael Clare for being open to reflect about what fatherhood as a seagoing scientist is like for him. 🌋🚢

"I love being a dad and am really proud to be able to share the research I do with my son. He is always asking questions, loves science and technology and is mad about the natural world. So it is always exciting to tell him about where I have been and what we have learned about the ocean.
Parenting is very much a team game though, so this very much relies on a supportive partner and making sure you step up when you are back from travels."

We're thrilled to announce a new partnership with REV Ocean as part of their Maiden Voyage Science Program, announced today! 📣🌊

The program launches in Rio de Janeiro in April 2027, alongside the UN Ocean Decade Conference, and runs through the South Atlantic, the Caribbean, the Sargasso Sea and the Eastern Tropical Pacific into late 2028.

NOC's Deputy Director of Strategic Science, and deep-sea biologist Prof Alex Rogers will co-lead the 2028 Sargasso Sea deep-sea and open-ocean research leg, with The Thünen-Institute collaborators. 🚢

🌊 This voyage will support international efforts toward a large-scale marine protected area beyond national jurisdiction.

💪 All data from the science program will be shared through the Ocean Data Platform (ODP) and other relevant platforms, ensuring findings remain accessible to partners, policymakers and researchers after each mission ends.

James Ketchell Adventure! What an inspiration!

We were so proud to be part of NOC Ambassador James’ homecoming yesterday, after he spent A YEAR sailing around the world!

🏆James, already a World Record holder, has now achieved another incredible feat - being the first person ever to have circumnavigated the globe by land (2013 🚴), air (2019🚁) and now sea (2026 ⛵️)!

Stay tuned to find out more about his journey in the coming weeks, including how he contributed to ocean science!

But for now, join us in celebrating this mammoth achievement!

📣 This World Ocean Day we are pleased to share the launch of TheThird World Ocean Assessment, which was contributed to by several of our researchers.

💙 This landmark publication brings together global expertise to provide the most comprehensive evidence‑based understanding of how the ocean is changing, and why a healthy and safe ocean matters for society and future generations.
