The NOC is funded by UK Research and Innovation to work on National Capability programmes, and manages on its behalf, the National Marine Equipment Pool - Europe’s largest fleet of autonomous and robotic vehicles, and two state of the art research ships RRS Discovery and RRS James Cook. The NOC has two sites, Southampton and Liverpool, and employs around 650 staff. We are co-located at both sites with leading UK Universities, giving us a unique position in UK marine research.

For 50 years, the Ellett Array (previously the Ellett Line) has provided one of the most important and enduring records of change in the North Atlantic Ocean.

This year's voyage is now underway, continuing the invaluable data time series that spans half a century.

Our voyage diary is being updated live by people on RRS Discovery now, giving you insight into the work the team are getting up to, and the sights they see along the way!

🌊 HERITAGE OPEN DAYS SPECIAL EVENT 🌊

Step back in time and discover incredible machines that helped predict tides around the world at the National Oceanography Centre in Liverpool.

Tide & Time is home to the Doodson-Légé and Roberts-Légé tide-predicting machines, pioneering analogue computers that supported global maritime navigation and contributed to Liverpool's success as a major port city.

This free exhibition is not normally open to the public, making this a rare chance to explore an often-overlooked piece of scientific and maritime heritage.

As the saying goes, time and tide wait for no-one. You shouldn’t either – so don’t delay, book today!

🌊🔥 Marine heatwave conditions continue across southern UK waters
Our latest update shows marine heatwave (MHW) conditions remain widespread across the southern half of the UK and Ireland, while most northern waters are not experiencing MHW conditions.

What we're seeing:
🔹 Waters off the southwest coast and in the Celtic Sea remain 3-4°C warmer than usual, although temperatures have eased slightly since last week's peak.
🔹 The central English Channel and southern North Sea continue to experience strong marine heatwave conditions, with sea temperatures around 3°C above average.
🔹 A small area off Weymouth remains in Category IV (‘Extreme’) marine heatwave conditions.
🔹 The western English Channel is beginning to cool, with conditions reducing from widespread Category II to mostly Category I.
🔹 The Irish Sea remains around 2°C warmer than usual, with some Irish and Welsh coastal waters reaching 3°C above average.

🌊🔥 The UK's ocean waters are still feeling the heat ☀️⤵️

Marine heatwave conditions remain widespread across the southern UK, with some areas 2-3°C warmer than normal and forecasts suggesting these conditions could continue through August.

"Climatologically, August is the month of peak sea surface temperatures around the UK, and the outlook is for MHW to persist around their current levels throughout the month, although this will be dependent on weather conditions."
💬Eloise Matthews, an Applied Climate Scientist at the UK Met Office

📉 There is some indication that the MHW is weakening in the Irish Sea with most of the region up to 1°C warmer than usual.
🌡️Meanwhile, temperatures at the Porcupine Abyssal Plain Sustained Observatory have topped 19°C for the first time this year.
🧭Waters around the northern half of the UK remain close to average conditions with some cooler waters developing around northern Scotland.

🌡️ Latest UK Marine Heatwave Update - 2 August

🔥MHW conditions still persist around southern UK & Ireland
⤵️ Unusually warm water now extends from the surface to the seabed off the coast of Weymouth
🌀 South of the Isles of Scilly, the warmer-than-average water is mixed down to around 30m
🌊 Off the Cornish coast, the warm layer is shallower, extending to around 20m
⚓️ South of Weymouth, the warm anomaly is mixed all the way to the seabed, approximately 40m deep

These regional observations were taken by the team aboard RRS James Cook on their return to Southampton after a month-long research voyage in the Whittard Canyon.

🪼 Are there more jellyfish this year? 🪼

With a surge of sightings around the UK, could the ongoing marine heatwave be behind a bloom, or are there just more people enjoying the sunshine and visiting the beach?

NOC Oceanographer Dr Zoe Jacobs asked University of Southampton Marine Biologist Prof Cathy Lucas to find out.

❔Is what we're seeing now unusual? ❔

A: Jellyfish numbers vary every year. It might be the warmer weather, or more people visiting the coast reporting sightings. The only non-native species spotted is the mauve stinger, common in Mediterranean waters.

❔Is the marine heatwave causing blooms?❔

A: It's really the temperatures and conditions in spring (Feb-Apr) that are more important for most UK species; good conditions can lead to large populations. Winds and sea conditions could also be causing more jellies to be spotted inshore and wash up on beaches.

❔Do UK jellyfish like warmer conditions❔

A: We lack evidence to suggest they 'like' it, but species like the compass, moon, and mauve stinger jellyfish are tolerant of a wider range of temperatures. Baby jellies (polyps) tend to prefer cooler springtime conditions.

❔What should I do if I see a jellyfish❔

A: Most UK species aren't too dangerous, but it's best to avoid touching them (alive, washed up, or even loose tentacles).
Get familiar with the species that could cause the most harm, and follow NHS advice for stings.
Join in on citizen science efforts, and report your sighting to the Marine Conservation Society.
