It’s been a couple of days of fantastic cricket for Calmore. Yesterday, the Y5/6 girls took to the field at Calmore Cricket Club and competed against schools from the New Forest in a series of games. Both teams did brilliantly well with the Year 5 team coming away with a bronze medal having achieved third overall. Today, the boys got their chance and again did so well. Both teams enjoyed victories and close matches with the Year 6s winning a silver medal. Across both days, the pupils picked their teams, organised themselves on the field and supported each other throughout. So impressed by the quality of cricket but also the leadership and collaboration on show.

Plenty of planting in our last gardening club for this half term. We had so much work to do planting in the sweetcorn, cabbage and broccoli 🥦
It’s fabulous to see the children throughly enjoying their time in our garden! Fun, friends and watching things grow through all our hard work!

Year 4 have been refining the skills of painting. Inspired by Cameroon artist, Koko Komegne, we designed and painted a seascape, applying our knowledge of blue tones, tints and shades which we learnt in a previous lesson. We think you will agree that it is a collection of paintings worthy of hanging in a gallery.

Yesterday, Year 4 took inspiration from the school garden to launch their new piece of writing. The children visited the garden to explore what they could see, hear, feel and smell ready to plan and write a setting description!

Plenty to plant and bugs to find in garden club this week. Peas, tomatoes and sweet peas are in. We’ve still got lots of weeding and sweetcorn, lettuce and cabbage to plant. We love bugs hunting and the children were braver than Miss Ball making friends with a spider 🕷️

Words can’t express how proud and impressed I am with these young men today! But I’ll try anyway…

The postponed Year 6 boys football from a few weeks ago was rearranged to today - 5 days before SATS! - but we were determined to ensure all those that had previously signed up could still go. Thank you to Miss Saunders and Mrs Jenkins for changing plans to make it work.

In some unexpected sunshine, the two teams really shone. Apparently WhatsApp groups had been created last night to discuss tactics and the excitement had certainly built to a crescendo as the first ball was kicked. Once again, the boys took charge of their formations and decision making - true leadership and teamwork on show.

The yellows started slowly but surely then really got into their stride with a stunning 5-1 victory midway through the tournament. A wonderful team goal saw Leo finish a great team move by sweeping home an unstoppable strike from the edge of the area in arguably the best goal of the day. Each and every player got better as the day went on and the team enjoyed some brilliant collective moves as well as individual winning moments that the boys can relive in their minds for a long time to come.

And so to the blues. Wow! Undefeated all tournament and playing some of the best team footy I’ve seen in a Calmore shirt. Absolutely stunning togetherness and interplay between the six of them saw the boys initially qualify top of the 25 team pile before eventually finishing with a bronze medal - conceding a last minute equaliser in game 7 denied them top spot…but their play was nothing short of golden.

Watching all the boys play today was a privilege and yet again demonstrated that sport brings more than just victory and defeat. I witnessed friendship, encouragement, resilience, bravery, fun, disappointment, unity. It’s only football…but so much more than that 💛💙

This week has certainly been about successful teams excelling. This afternoon, 23 pupils from across Year 5 and 6 finally got the chance to compete in the cross country event that had been postponed back in February.

The course and challenge they faced was much different to back then as warm sunshine served spectators well but took its toll on the runners. But you’d not have known…

Cross country is always an inspiring event to witness. For those out front it is impressive to see and we had Zach and Poppy both put in amazing performances coming in the top 12 for their races; Aria too finishing in the top 20. Amazing.

But where we’re truly left in awe is at those children that, knowing the ‘race is already won’, continue to drain every last ounce of effort and energy in pushing themselves to their limit…and beyond.

We always talk about imagining our energy like a bottle of water - be careful not to pour it away too quickly or you’ll have nothing left later. Every pupil managed that bottle perfectly and for their own race, squeezed the final drops out as they sprinted to the line. Now empty.

Add to that the team spirit amongst the children, loudly cheering their mates on from behind the ropes whilst also quietly willing individuals to keep going. Some of the dances and songs were a little interesting…but they seemed to work!!

Always so impressed by our pupils…but this week, they’ve been incredible! ⭐
