Leader's Corner: Standing together and supporting each other

Last week, everyone will have been saddened by the tragic death of university student, Henry Nowak in our city in December 2025. Our thoughts are very much with Henry’s family and friends at this very difficult time.

Southampton's strength lies in the resilience of its people, communities, and our shared commitment to looking out for one another. At times such as these, it is important that we stand together and support each other.

We are working closely with partners and communities across the city to ensure that people feel safe and welcome in the city. This is one of our key priorities in our City Plan to create a Safer Southampton.

As Leader of the Council, I am committed to doing everything I can to make Southampton a safer, healthier, more equal, greener and growing city in which everyone thrives. This can only be achieved by working with local residents, communities and partners.

Last week, partners including Hampshire Constabulary and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service joined forces to provide a free community event at the fire station in St Mary’s as part of our commitment to Build a Brighter Future for St Mary’s.

Despite the heat, the event was really popular, and it was great to celebrate to see so many residents enjoying spending time together, sharing ideas and pledging to work together to make St Mary’s a better place to live.

In June, I will be marking the 10th anniversary of the murder of Jo Cox MP and the events of this week reminded me of her maiden speech in the House of Commons when she said: “we are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us”.

I would love to hear from you if you have ideas on how we can work together to build unity in the city.

Food waste collections: Phase 4 starts tomorrow!

Food waste collections are rolling out to flats and properties with communal bin stores from tomorrow, Monday 1 June!🙌

We’re really excited to see even more residents getting involved and helping turn food waste into energy and compost.♻️

👉 What this means for you:

💚 Communal food waste bins are now in place in shared bin areas

💚 Collections will begin once your service goes live on your usual collection day next week

We’re also aware that some residents may not have received their kitchen caddy yet. This is due to some operational challenges with deliveries, thank you for bearing with us while we work to get these to you.

✅ In the meantime, you can still take part by using a plastic bag to transfer your food waste to your communal bin.

Thanks for your patience and for helping make Southampton a cleaner, greener city 💚

Southampton Heritage Fair returns to Southampton City Art Gallery on Saturday 6 June, from 10am to 4pm 🏰

The free event, organised by Southampton Heritage Network, brings together local heritage groups, historians, volunteers and community organisations to celebrate the city’s history.

See the famous 'Saints' bus and learn about local history from the many stall holders, talks and guided walks, including a Civic Centre and D Day walk led by Andy Skinner at 11.30am, meeting at the fountain outside the Art Gallery.

As 6 June also marks the anniversary of D Day, visitors can also see the plaque in the Art Gallery presented by the 14th Major Port, U.S. Army, which records the use of part of the Civic Centre as headquarters of the port during the Second World War.

The NHS are seeking people’s views and experiences to help shape how urgent care services are delivered. The survey closes at midnight on Sunday 21 June.

Have your say by visiting the website: https://survey.ntropydata.co.uk/surveys/JG2026IUC2?fbclid=IwY2xjawSE9mVleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETB6UklBUzcwSGpTcUV6WWk2c3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHtzji27pMXHK9NG9FR8FiXwagYPwArDPqOKvLrd9hLvYqA7yHPsWFvvuyu4T_aem_9TduB9wocDMMiUZHBuElCQ

Your feedback will help shape and improve services for our local communities ✅

We are seeking people’s views and experiences to help shape how urgent care services, like GP out-of-hours services, night nursing services and urgent treatment centres, are delivered. Urgent care services provide medical help when it is needed quickly but is not life-threatening, offering an alternative to attending emergency departments.

We are reviewing our urgent care contracts as existing agreements come up for renewal in 2028, creating an opportunity to look at how services work together and how people access care. No immediate changes to services are planned as part of this work. A public survey and programme of engagement events are now underway to gather feedback from local communities. This work will directly influence how urgent care services are designed and delivered in the future.

The review covers services in Portsmouth, Southampton, and Hampshire. While Isle of Wight services are not up for renewal, feedback from island residents will help inform future service development. This work supports delivery of the new 10 Year Plan and wider national priorities to improve urgent and emergency care, making services easier to access, more joined-up, and better able to meet people’s needs closer to home.

Dr Tom Bertram, GP and Clinical Lead for Primary and Local Care, said: “Thousands of people use urgent NHS services across our area every day, and these services play a vital role in helping people get the right care in the right place. This is a real opportunity for people to influence how these services are delivered in the future. We want to hear what works well, as well as where improvements could be made.”

The services to be reviewed include:

- The Clinical Assessment Service that sits inside NHS111. This is where a clinician reviews your case to decide what care you need.
- Out-of-hours GP services, including face-to-face appointments and home visiting.
- Night nursing services.

A short survey has been developed to gather feedback, alongside targeted engagement sessions delivered by Action Hampshire to ensure a wide range of community voices are heard. Feedback is welcome from anyone who has used urgent care services. Alongside the online survey, we are working with Action Hampshire and identifying specific groups within our communities who may already be higher users of our urgent care services, may experience language or access barriers, or carers that have different perspectives on using services.

The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete, is anonymous and open until June 21. A survey for health and care professionals to share their experiences of working in urgent care services is also available until June 21. Both links can be found in the comments.

Alternative formats, including Easy Read, large print and translated versions are available on request, alongside support to complete the survey. Please email [email protected].
