LGBTQ+EDI March – In June

To recognise and celebrate the diversity and inclusion within our care home, and to mark our 70th Anniversary, we are hoping to hold our very own LGBTQ+EDI March on the afternoon of Friday 19th June — an important month for both Abbeyfield and Pride.

Our march will be a gentle procession, safely winding from Speedwell Court to Haskins and back again. Haskins have kindly agreed for us to loop through and around the garden centre before we begin our return journey.

Once back at Speedwell, we will continue the celebrations with an LGBTQ+EDI themed tea party in the garden (weather permitting).

This event will only be possible with your participation, so to help us understand numbers, please get in touch to express your interest and learn more.

We hope this will be a colourful joyful opportunity to celebrate our diverse and inclusive care community.

☀️ Summer has arrived in full force, and it’s wonderful to see the sunshine at last — although perhaps a little warmer than we’d like! 🌡️😅

Whatever the weather, our activities team do a fantastic job keeping residents engaged, entertained, and smiling. 👏🎨🎶💛

Would you just look at these little darlings 🐦💙 — a family of baby blue t**s.

Mum and dad made good use of the bird house in the garden 🏡🌿 to raise their tiny chicks, who were feeling brave (and probably a bit too warm indoors ☀️) so fledged this morning 🐥✨

Dementia Action Week 18 - 24th - led by Alzheimer’s Society, bringing people and organisations together to act on dementia.

Singing with Speedwell.

Research shows that music can help reduce heart rate, lower blood pressure, and improve overall wellbeing. Because musical memory relies on different neural networks across the brain, it often remains strong for people living with the condition. This means that music and singing can provide valuable mental stimulation, encourage engagement, and help trigger positive, feel-good emotions.

Our “Singing with Speedwell” sessions (which have been running for many years), are a stable feature for those in the community living with dementia and their carers to feel welcome. You don’t need to be a great singer to join in — you might prefer to hum along or tap your foot, and just be part of it.

Supported by two dedicated volunteers, these sessions are always warm, welcoming, and special.

Sessions take place on the second Thursday of every month from 2:30pm to 4:00pm. There is no need to book — just come on in and give it a try. We promise you’ll go home humming the songs!

Day 2: See our Community Lunch Club poster — a welcoming event for those looking for a change of scene in like-minded company.

Carers can relax, be waited on, and enjoy a little pampering while sharing lunch together with the person they care for - in a warm and supportive environment.

These monthly luncheons have been running since 2023 and have become a valued part of the support we provide to our local community, all with the aim of supporting people affected by dementia.

As part of Dementia Action Week and to highlight the support we provide the local community.

Take a look at the relaxed and informal session each month, aimed at those living with dementia and their carers to attend. It is a way to socialise as well as gain valuable information.

Dementia Action Week is an awareness campaign led by Alzheimer’s Society, bringing people and organisations together to act on dementia.

Along with caring for those living with this condition, we use our understanding to try and support our local community as well.

One such example being our Dementia Awareness Days. These sessions have predominantly been attended by healthcare professionals seeking to deepen their understanding - however were open to all. The positive feedback received was encouraging, and even two years later these events continue to be recognised for their educational value. It might be time to pencil in another.

Our awareness days would not have been possible without the professional speakers who gave their time freely, to share their expertise and wisdom. THANK YOU.

We acknowledge Alzheimer's Society aims to raise this week - and realise the importance of days like these along with all other initiatives that help those affected by Dementia.
