Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK — but screening helps detect it early, often before symptoms appear. Early detection means treatment is more likely to be successful.
✅ Who gets the free kit?
• Ages 50–74: You’ll be sent a home test kit (FIT kit) every 2 years.
• 75 or over: Call 0800 707 6060 to request yours.
🧪 Simple home test: Collect a tiny poo sample and pop it in the post — that’s it!
🔍 Even better accuracy
The NHS has improved test sensitivity, meaning hundreds more cancers can now be spotted earlier each year.

Bowel Cancer Screening: A Vital Step for Early Detection

Bowel cancer screening plays a crucial role in identifying signs of cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage. Screening uses the faecal immunochemical test (FIT), which detects small traces of blood in a stool sample. Eligibility:
• Individuals aged 50 to 74 are automatically sent an NHS bowel cancer screening kit every two years.
• Those aged 75 or older may request a kit by contacting the helpline on 0800 707 6060.

Recent improvements:
The NHS has recently increased the sensitivity of the FIT test to improve early detection rates.
