Some of our local Green Party members had a great evening at read-on-sea bookshop in Leigh meeting the inspirational Natalie Bennett, Green Party Member of the House of Lords. We can wholeheartedly recommend her books ‘Change Everything’ and ‘Green Thinking’ 💚 We love her! 💚

From protecting our wildlife, beaches and Greenbelt, to pushing to save North Street Swimming Pool and making our streets safer, we’ll continue to challenge, question and push for action.

We have two Green motions going before Full Council this Thursday.

🌳 Protecting our Green Belt

We promised to do everything we could to protect Southend’s precious green spaces, and this is our first motion since the local elections to deliver on that promise. We’re calling on the Council to:

🟢 Protect Bournes Green Green Belt and oppose any “Grey Belt” reclassification.
🏡 Prioritise homes on brownfield sites and existing planning permissions before building on green fields.
🌾 Challenge development proposals on Salvation Army land and support sustainable farming to safeguard local farmland.

🌍 Reaffirming Climate Emergency Status

As communities across the UK experience more extreme heat and flooding, the impacts of climate change are becoming impossible to ignore. At a time when some parties are attempting to row back on climate action, we’re calling on the Council to reaffirm its commitment to the climate emergency, strengthen carbon literacy, and accelerate the delivery of its climate commitments.

These motions are about protecting Southend’s future: our green spaces, our environment, and the health and wellbeing of our communities. 💚

Let's be clear: the Green Group is not part of the administration at Southend City Council. We proudly remain an independent opposition group.

Some of the usual suspects, including a former Tory councillor in this fortnight’s Leigh-on-Sea News, are insinuating that we are in the administration. Here are clear signs we’re not:

🤦🏻 The Press Release from the Council does not mention the Greens
🙋🏼‍♀️ Our four councillors voted differently at the last Full Council meeting
❌ Keir Starmer has said no to local Labour-Green coalitions
👑 No Green councillor holds a Cabinet position
🌾 We have significant policy disagreements with Southend Labour, including plans to build on Bournes Green

Our role is to hold the Lab/Lib/Ind administration to account, challenge decisions when we don't agree, and support policies when they’re right.

Great to have the Eastern Region Green Party Conference with Natalie Bennett, Green Party Member of the House of Lords and Green Party CEO Harriet Lamb in our own City of Southend yesterday.

We had 200 members join us at The Palace Hotel for a day of speeches, discussion and workshops following the party’s strongest ever local election results across the region.

Wow! What a fantastic day to be joined by so many Green Party community campaigners from across the East of England at our regional conference in Southend today.
