Sefton Council’s w**d spraying programme will now be reviewed following a request from Cambridge Ward Liberal Democrat Councillor Mike Sammon for a full review of what has gone wrong.

Last week, Southport Lib Dems questioned Sefton Council about the failure of this year’s w**d spraying programme following concern from residents across the town. There should be 4 sprays of w**dkiller a year, beginning March and being completed in May. Now at the end of June, the first spray of the w**d killing has still not been completed across the town.

At a Council scrutiny (Regeneration and Skills) meeting last night, Mike Sammon asked that the w**d spraying issue will be brought to the next meeting for a full review of what went wrong. He also raised his concerns that the w**d spraying programme may have started too late in the year, with some Southport wards only having their first spray completed this week after delays reportedly caused by weather issues.

Cllr Mike Sammon said: “It was really worrying to hear that the first spray is just being completed at the end of June. So that's taken three months to complete what should only take 6 weeks, assuming reasonable weather.

“I really welcome that the programme will now be properly scrutinised and that lessons can be learned. There are clearly problems with the current programme and residents are seeing the consequences on streets across Southport, where on some there are more w**ds than pavements.”

Lesley Delves, Lib Dem Councillor for Ainsdale and fellow member of the Regeneration & Skills Committee, added: “The Council needs to identify what has gone wrong this year, bring pavements back up to the standard residents expect as soon as possible and deliver the recovery programme.”
