Geraldine Roberts: “The Rebel & the Peacemaker" @ Southwold Literary Festival

Southwold Arts Centre, St Edmund's Hall, Southwold, IP18 6JP

Sunday 15th November 2026 10.00am

Geraldine Roberts is an author and a historian specialising in the Regency era. Her work centres on the achievements of real women in this period, and the dynamics within their marriages. She is the author of “The Angel and the Cad”, which published in 2015.

When it came to Charles and Mary Bagot, the gossips of Regency England had more than their fill. The marriage, initially the toast of high society, was one marked with scandal & adultery. And when rumours of a particularly salacious affair broke through London, the couple were banished to the New World. Having sailed across the ocean, Charles and Mary settled into their new home among the mudflows of Washington. It was here that they would serve their penance as the first British Ambassadors to America, at a pivotal moment in the new nation's history. But against the odds &, in spite of their misfortune, the Bagots would emerge as the leading diplomats of their day. Their innate gift for politics, culture & social affairs was a tonic to the Anglo-American tensions and would lay the groundwork for modern global diplomacy. Their trailblazing work, first in the United States & then later in Russia and Canada that would forever change the power dynamics on the world stage. Meticulously researched, “The Rebel and The Peacemaker” is the untold story of romance, scandal and the art of diplomacy.

Stewart White: BBC Look East Legend @ Southwold Literary Festival

Southwold Arts Centre, St Edmund's Hall, Southwold, IP18 6JP

Saturday 14th November 2026 5.00pm

For more than 37 years, Stewart White presented “Look East” on BBC 1 in the Eastern Counties. For most of that time, he was on air 5 nights a week, every week. With more than 8,000 editions of “Look East” under his belt, it represents one of the longest uninterrupted runs presenting the same programme in British television history. During that time, he interviewed members of the royal family, prime ministers & some of the biggest stars of stage, screen & popular music. When he retired in 2021, he kept it a secret from everybody, including staff at the BBC, until he announced it live on air at the end his final programme. He lives in South Norfolk with his wife, Jane. He has 3 children & 7 grandchildren.

A journey from a Wiltshire village to the heart of regional broadcasting, “See You at 6:30” is the captivating memoir of beloved BBC presenter Stewart White. With warmth & wit, he recounts a life spent behind the microphone, from his early days in local radio to becoming the face of BBC Look East for nearly four decades. Stewart shares unforgettable encounters with Hollywood legends like James Stewart & Walter Matthau, the chaos of live television, & the profound human stories at the heart of regional news. This is a heartfelt & engaging reflection on a changing industry, the power of storytelling, & a lifetime of being welcomed into half a million homes every evening.
