Members of South Holland District Council's Cabinet gave approval last night (Tuesday 17 Feb 2026) to new waste and recycling arrangements.
The new arrangements will go live in the autumn supporting the Council's ambition to provide a cleaner, greener waste service, as well as supporting residents do the right thing for the environment.
The new arrangements mean:
- Residents will be able to recycle paper and card separately.
- Separate food waste collection, which will be rolled out to the district.
- Residents will get new wheelie bins for recycling and residual waste and smaller caddies for food waste.
- Food waste will be collected weekly and residual waste and recycling will be collected on alternating weeks.
The changes are part of the Government's plan to transition the waste sector to net zero by 2050 and to make it easier for households to recycle materials.
Residents will receive a kerbside caddy and a smaller kitchen caddy for food waste. The caddies have lockable lids, making it difficult for animals to access. The introduction of separate food waste collections means things like peelings, eggshells, fish and meat bones, tea bags and any leftover food can be recycled.
Councillor Jim Astill, Portfolio Holder for Corporate and Environmental Services for South Holland District Council said:
"I am pleased that we have finalised the policy for our new waste and recycling process for the district."
"The uncontrolled amount of waste currently allowed to be collected often results in our waste crews being unable to complete their rounds, which sometimes results in missed collections. This is not only annoying for residents, it's also an extra cost for the Council."
"These approved changes will mean that we are compliant with Government legislation and will help us work towards the national target of recycling 65 percent of household waste by 2035."
"There's no doubt bins will help us deliver a more effective service, and will allow residents to more easily recycle and reduce the volume of waste currently going for incineration. "
"Some residents will welcome the changes and I appreciate that some may find the change uncomfortable. Be assured that we will be updating information for our residents as we come closer to the delivery of the new bins and caddies."
Updated information will be published on the Council's website and social media channels.
