When summer temperatures spike, keeping cool is about far more than basic comfort - it's about creating an environment where our dedicated NHS team can perform their most critical work safely and effectively.

We recently received an urgent request to supply a new fan for the hospital's Script Room, where vital medications and drugs are stored and prepared. Working inside a small room during a heatwave can be incredibly uncomfortable, yet the staff soldiered on without complaint to ensure patient care continued. Naturally, the Friends were only too pleased to approve the purchase right away.

Making a Difference Behind the Scenes

Sorting and managing medication requires absolute precision and focus. Now that the fan is fully installed, the atmosphere in the room is vastly improved, allowing the team to carry out their duties in a much cooler, more comfortable setting. Danielle Holton, Clinical Team Leader, is already enjoying the welcome breeze! While a fan might seem like a small item, it makes a huge difference to staff working hard behind the scenes to keep our patients safe and well-cared for.

Keeping Cool When It Matters Most

Hospital visits can be stressful enough on a normal day, but when summer delivers a sweltering heatwave, temperatures inside can quickly become overwhelming for everyone involved.

We recently received a request for a new fan in the hospital’s Phlebotomy Room. Because strict infection control protocols mean air conditioning cannot be installed in the unit, the summer heat was putting immense pressure on both visiting patients and the hard-working team on duty. Naturally, the Friends were delighted to step in and help.

With the new fan now officially installed and up and running, the atmosphere in the room has become more bearable. As you can see, Sam Green, Clinical Health Care Support Worker, was absolutely delighted to feel a much-needed cool breeze while caring for patients. Having a comfortable space isn't just about convenience - it helps put anxious patients at ease and ensures our dedicated healthcare staff can focus on providing that important care without battling with the heat.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone at Fenchurch House Care Home for inviting us to be part of such a vibrant event and for showing us such wonderful kindness once again!

A Sunny Saturday at the Fenchurch House Summer Fair!

Friends' members - Christine Grocock, Jean Hill, and Christine Lawton - were absolutely delighted to attend the annual Fenchurch House Care Home Summer Fair this past Saturday. As always, the team at Fenchurch House went above and beyond to make us feel really welcome.

Highlights of the Day

Entertainment & Fun: Families turned out in full force to enjoy live music from Susie Bartlett, a bouncing castle, and plenty of traditional games.
Raffle Prizes: The raffle featured fantastic prizes for the lucky winners.
Delicious Treats: Attendees enjoyed a freshly cooked BBQ with delicious burgers and hot dogs, topped off with an array of magnificent homemade cakes.
Garden & Hospitality: We spent a wonderfully relaxed afternoon soaking up the sunshine in the delightful garden.

If you or a loved one are ever looking for a care home in the future, we cannot recommend Fenchurch House Care Home highly enough. The staff are exceptionally warm, attentive, and helpful - nothing is ever too much trouble.

The Friends' Charity simply would not be able to fund these important items for patient comfort without the ongoing generosity and support of our incredible local community.

To everyone who has donated, volunteered, or supported our fundraising efforts: thank you for helping us make a real difference to patient care every single day.

When the Friends of Johnson Community Hospital were initially approached to buy some replacement remote controls, it opened the door to a much bigger conversation.

Late 2023, looking around the wards, it was clear that the televisions - originally installed when the new hospital opened back in 2009 - were well past their best. Entertainment and a welcome distraction play a huge role in a patient's recovery and daily comfort, so when asked if we could replace the out-of-date sets, our members were only too delighted to step in and help.

Supporting Local to Support Our Hospital

Wanting to keep things local, the Friends reached out to Hughes Electrical. Working together, we were able to supply twenty brand-new 32-inch hospitality televisions across the wards, along with an impressive 65-inch television for the Day Room. Building on that great working relationship with Hughes, we recently followed up by purchasing 15 new remote controls to keep everything running smoothly.

The impact of these new additions has already been felt across the hospital. Hazel John, Clinical Team Lead, shared her gratitude with the team: "My heartfelt thanks for your generous support. Your contributions make a significant difference, and we truly appreciate your kindness."

A Heartfelt Thank You and a Warm Welcome: The Friends' Trolley Shop Handover

For the past eighteen months, the wonderful members of Pinchbeck WI have been the friendly faces behind the Friends' Trolley Shop. We extend our deepest gratitude to Dorothy, Tracey, Philomena, Marion, and Linda, who generously made time from their busy schedules to help reinstate this vital service. Their dedication has brought comfort and connection to so many.

The Trolley Shop is a non-profit service provided by The Friends' Charity specifically for patients on the Welland Ward. Stocked with everyday essentials such as toiletries, sweets, and magazines, it ensures patients have easy access to items they might otherwise lack during their stay.

However, the Trolley Shop is so much more than a mobile store. Beyond the practical items, it brings a warm smile and a friendly chat straight to the bedside. For patients who may not have regular visitors, these gentle social interactions are truly invaluable, offering warmth and companionship when it is needed most.

As the Pinchbeck WI team steps back, we are delighted to share that Sally Goodacre, a new member of the Friends' Charity, is taking over the running of the shop. Sally is already an active hospital visitor, and she is eager to blend her visiting role with managing the trolley.

"Taking on the Trolley Shop feels like such a natural fit," says Sally Goodacre. "Having the trolley with me gives a wonderful, practical reason to approach patients and strike up a conversation, rather than turning up cold. It really opens the door to connect with people and brightens their day."

While the WI members are taking a well-deserved step back from regular duties, community support remains as strong as ever. Both Tracey and Philomena have kindly offered to step in and assist Sally whenever the need arises.
