What’s the difference between a Carer and a care worker?

A Carer is usually a family member, friend or neighbour who supports someone because they care about them.

They’re unpaid.
They don’t clock off.
They don’t always recognise themselves as a Carer - they’re often “just doing what needs to be done”.

A Care Worker is a trained professional who is paid to provide care as part of their job, often through an organisation or care provider.

Both roles are important.
Both involve skill, compassion and responsibility.
But they are not the same - and the support available can be different.

At Durham County Carers, we exist to support unpaid Carers - people caring for parents, partners, children, friends or neighbours who couldn’t manage without them.

If you’re supporting someone because you love them - and it feels like more than “just helping out” - you may be a Carer, and support could be available to you too.

💙 You don’t need a job title to deserve support.

Carers Week 2026 8th - 14th June 📆

Offers an important opportunity to shine a light on the millions of unpaid Carers who support family members, friends, and neighbours every day. This year’s theme focuses on Building Carer Friendly Communities. This will highlight the impact Carer friendly communities can have in making a real and lasting difference to the lives of Carers everywhere. Across the UK, Carers play a vital role in society, often balancing employment, education, and personal responsibilities alongside their caring duties. Yet many remain unseen and under-supported.

Carers Week is a time to change that, to ensure carers are recognised not just in words, but through meaningful action.

All events will be posted this upcoming week, keep a look out 👀
