Common sandpiper this morning from the Kingfisher hide

2 newly fledged Kingfishers emerged this morning.

Highlights 22-07-26
A cooler morning today along the TPT with sightings of Greenfinch, Blackcap, Chiffchaff and Song thrush. A Herring gull passed overhead followed by a Common tern, heading onto the Flash, on the Flash a Lesser black-backed gull and several Black-headed gull. From the screen Little grebe was noted and a Tawny Owl was heard calling, at the Kingfisher hide we recorded Common sandpiper and Northern lapwing. A Great spotted woodpecker dropped in and began to forage in a tree at the side of the hide, several Reed bunting and Reed warbler were also noted, on the water there was 2 adult Great crested grebes and 3 well established juveniles. At the Heron hide we noted a single Greylag, along with Sand martin and Barn swallow and back on the TPT we observed a pair of adult Kingfishers with 2 newly fledged young.

Taking advantage of the cooler weather this morning we headed to the Flash where we noted 2 Little grebe, 2 adult and 3 juvenile Great crested grebe, 6 Black-headed gull, 1 Common tern. 2 Grey heron, 1 Little egret, 1 Lapwing, 1 Green sandpiper, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Shoveler, 14 Mallard, 24 Gadwall, 8 Tufted duck, 2 Cormorant, 16 Coot, 12 Moorhen, 4 Greylag, 11 Canada geese, 2 Mute swans on the flash and 2 Mute swans on the river along with Nuthatch, Great spotted woodpecker, Blackbird, Robin, Wren, Dunnock, Whitethroat, Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Reed warbler, Reed bunting, Great tit, Coal tit, Long-tailed tit, Blue tit, Chaffinch, Bullfinch, Goldfinch, Song thrush, Stock dove, Wood pigeon, Collared dove, Jackdaw, Carrion crow, Magpie, Pheasant, Swift, Swallow, House martin, Sand martin, Cetti’s warbler and Willow warbler. Other sightings were Tansy, Pond skater, Black-tailed skimmer, Banded demoiselle, Common blue, Emperor, Common darter, Ringlet, Large white, Small white, Comma, Peacock, Red admiral, Gatekeeper and Green-veined white.

19-24th June highlights
2 Lesser black-backed gulls were observed stealing eggs and attempting to sn**ch ducklings, Black-headed gull numbers were down to less than a handful and a pair of Common tern continued to visit the Flash and was also noted fishing on the river. Common buzzard, kestrel and Sparrowhawk were recorded along with a Hobby while on Spring lane a Little owl was reported. Great spotted woodpecker called from Levitt Hagg woods and a Green
woodpecker was recorded up near the viaduct. Mallard, Tufted duck, Coot, Moorhen and Gadwall were present along with a solitary male Teal. Great crested grebes still had 3 well grown juveniles and several Little grebe were recorded along with a calling water rail at the Kingfisher hide. Cetti’s warbler, Reed warbler, Blackcap, Common whitethroat, Willow warbler and Chiffchaff were recorded along with the usual T**s and Finches. On the 22nd a Northern lapwing was recorded on the spits followed by Pied wagtail while Grey wagtail and Little egret were
regularly recorded at the weir. Kingfisher activity remained sporadic with several sightings on the river and Flash. Other sightings included Grey partridge, Mute swans, Skylark, Reed bunting, Greylag geese and Canada geese with goslings. Peacock, Red admiral, Small tortoiseshell, Green veined white and Large white butterflies. Black tailed skimmer Four spot chaser, Southern hawker, Emperor, Banded demoiselle and Common blue damselfly.

16-18 highlights
Up to 2 Lesser black-backed gulls seen frequently on the flash trying to catch Mallard ducklings, 2 Little grebe, 1 Adult GC grebe, the other probably nesting. 20+ Mallard, 24+ Gadwall, 8 Tufted and 1 Teal present along with Coot and Moorhen. Cetti’s warbler, Goldfinch, Reed bunting, Reed warbler, Chiffchaff, Blackcap and Willow warbler recorded from the Kingfisher hide. 2 Grey partridge, Little owl, Greenfinch, Skylark and Linnet reported nearby. 2 Swift on the 18th along with several House martin and Barn swallow with good numbers of Sand martin also present. Sparrowhawk, Kestrel and Common buzzard recorded. Stock dove, Woodpigeon, Carrion crow, Magpie and Jackdaw also noted. Grey wagtail on flash and Common whitethroat on the TPT. Common tern spotted on river along with a pair of Mute swans. Red admiral, Painted lady, Black-tailed skimmer, Banded demoiselle, Common blue damsel, Southern hawker, Harlequin ladybirds and Lavae, Wood wasp and Sawfly.
