Highlights 06/04
Along the TPT 1f Mallard+10 ducklings, 2 Grey wagtail, 8 Chiffchaff, 2 Cetti's warbler, 3 Blackcap. On the flash 3m+1f Pochard, 16 Canada, 13 Greylag, 2 Mute swan, 2 GC Grebe, 2 Little grebe, 1 Common snipe. Plantation 2 Common buzzard, 1 Kestrel, 1 Green woodpecker, 1 Nuthatch, Levitt hagg 1 drumming GS Woodpecker. In the village c40 Fieldfare. Butterflies Orange tip, Holly blue, Small tortoiseshell.

Highlights 01-04 April
01/04 A Spoonbill was reported heading SW in the afternoon, a Fox was noted and Song thrush and Wren were observed carrying nesting material. 03/04 At the screen a Mallard was down to 2 chicks, Canada goose and Coot were nesting and over Pot Ridings woods 2 Common buzzard and a Kestrel. At the Kingfisher hide 2 Great crested grebe, 1 Grey heron, 1 Stock dove at the owl box. Greylag, Mallard, Gadwall, Tufted duck, Cormorant and Moorhen also seen. 2 Shelduck headed SW and on the TPT Chiffchaff, Blackcap and Cettis warbler. At the Heron hide, 3 Sand martin, 1 Mistle thrush, 1 Goldcrest, 2 Jay and 1 singing Willow warbler. On the water 4 Little grebe, 1 male Mute swan chasing Canada and Greylag geese, over Levitt Hagg wood 1 Sparrowhawk. 04/04 14 Mallard ducklings at the falls and a Grey wagtail, 3m Pochard and 1f at the Flash.

26/03 highlights
A walk to the viaduct and Fowlsyke flash gave us our first singing Willow warbler of the season, plenty of Chiffchaffs around along with 2 Nuthatch, 2 Green woodpecker and 3 Common buzzard. On the water a pair of adult Mute swans were chasing off 2 immature Mute swans and several Greylag were present. Back at the Flash the first Barn swallow of the season was reported along with 9 Fieldfare. On the water a pair of Great crested grebe were observed catching fish. 3 Little grebe were recorded along with 4 Teal. Other wetland birds included Gadwall, Mallard, Tufted duck, Greylag geese, Canada geese, Grey heron, Cormorant, Coot, Moorhen, 1 pair of Mute swans and several male Pochard. A pair of stock dove were noted on the Owl box and 2 pairs of Reed buntings were spotted on reedmace. Cetti’s warbler called and 2 male and 2 Female Blackcaps were recorded. Over the river we noted 3 more Common buzzard and a Kestrel and on the river we spotted a single Kingfisher.

24/03 highlights.
A Great White Egret was observed from the Kingfisher hide as it dropped into the reedbed before heading past the Boat Inn and down the river. At the Heron hide Jackdaws, Pheasants and Carrion crows were feeding in the field and several Skylark were singing, 3 male Pochard and 1 female was present on the water and a pair of Great crested grebes were noted mating. On the Quay near the lock a pair of Mute swans were also noted mating and were possibly the pair that bred at Newton farm last year. A Common buzzard circled over Pot Ridings wood and Green woodpecker called, Nuthatch, Treecreeper and Coal tit were recoded along with a showy male Blackcap. Back on the Flash, Mute swan, Greylag geese, Canada geese, Mallard, Gadwall, Moorhen, Teal, Tufted duck, Little grebe, Cormorant, Grey heron, Coot and Water rail were recorded along with Cetti’s warbler, Chiffchaff, Song thrush, Grey wagtail, Black-headed gull and Reed bunting.

20/03 highlights
A male Merlin was recorded heading south followed by a pair of Peregrine falcon recorded over Pot Ridings wood. On the Flash 2 Little egret were recorded along with 1 Grey Heron, 4 Little grebe, 2m Teal, 1m Pochard and a pair of Great crested grebe. Also present were 24 Greylags, 8 Canada geese,14 Gadwall, 20 Tufted duck, 12 Mallard, 11 Cormorant, 17 Coot and 9 Moorhen. At the Kingfisher hide 2 Cetti’s warblers were calling, a water rail was tucked under foliage to the left and a Chiffchaff was spotted in the Willow tree, Blackcap was calling and Stock dove was on the Owl post. On Nursery lane a Jay was reported and on the TPT, Redwing, Chiffchaff, Blackcap and Song thrush were recorded along with the usual t**s and finches. At the Heron hide another Cetti’s warbler was calling and a pair of Reed bunting were spotted on the head of a reed mace. Robin, Wren, Chaffinch and Long-tailed tit were seen with nesting material and Great spotted woodpecker was observed excavating a new hole.

16/03 highlights
Warmer weather brought out the butterflies with Peacock, Comma and Brimstone all recorded. A Kingfisher was spotted on the river and at the lock 2 Yellowhammer were noted while on the Flash the single Lapwing had returned. 2 pair of Long-tailed t**s were observed with nesting material on the TPT and several redwing were recorded along with 8 Chiffchaff, noted singing and 3 Blackcap. 12 Siskin passed over and were feeding in a tree across the river while other sightings included Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Goldcrest, Song thrush, Coal tit, Wren and female Bullfinch along with the usual Great t**s, Blue t**s, Dunnocks, Blackbirds and Robins. A domestic goose had found its way onto the Flash and was promptly set upon by the resident Mute swans who have become a little more territorial, the Swan also ejected Greylags and Canada geese for good measure. Several Little grebe were noted along with Water rail and a Pair of Great crested grebe. A Sparrowhawk headed over the Flash followed by a Peregrine falcon while Red kite was spotted near the viaduct. The Environment Agency cleared a blockage on the outflow valve on the Flash which had been the cause of very high water levels, the maintenance work had an immediate effect with the water level dropping 5cm overnight, hopefully the spits and wader bays will soon be exposed attracting more wading birds.

09/03 highlights
5 Chiffchaff, 3 Cetti’s warblers and a Blackcap were singing this morning along the TPT and at the screen a Reed bunting was spotted on the head of a reed mace, a species which hasn't been seen very often over the last 12 months . A Kingfisher was noted on the river and on the canal there was a pair of Grey wagtails. From the Kingfisher hide 2 Common snipe and a Lapwing were recorded and at the Heron hide a pair of Great crested grebes continued displaying and occasional nest building with the female observed presenting herself to the male from the prospective nest. 2 Common buzzard perched on the Osprey stand and the resident Mute swans patrolled the water keeping Canada and Greylag geese on the fields. 4 male and a female Pochard were observed while 3 Red-legged partridge and 4 Grey partridge were reported nearby along with a Red kite and 8 Skylark. Green woodpecker and Great spotted woodpecker called from the woods and a Raven was noted passing over.

On the 4th a Merlin was observed chasing a Skylark on Cadeby mile and a female Stonechat was reported along with 8 Northern lapwing, At the Flash a single Lapwing was recorded at the Kingfisher hide and the Great crested grebe pair continued to display at the Heron hide.

05/03 highlights
On the TPT 2 singing Chiffchaff were noted along with Bullfinch, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Siskin, Treecreeper, Wren, Robin, Blackbird, Blackcap, Dunnock, Coal tit, Great tit, Blue tit and 2 Long-tailed t**s (observed nest building). At the Kingfisher hide a Northern lapwing dropped in followed by a Common snipe and 2 Cetti’s warbler and a Reed bunting was calling. Greylag and Canada geese were present along with a single pair of Teal but there was no sign of the resident Mute swans. At the Heron hide a pair of Common buzzard was on the Osprey stand, the male took off and returned with a vole for the female while a Grey heron was spotted catching several Toads. On the water Tufted duck, Gadwall, Mallard, Coot, Pochard, Moorhen, BH Gull, Little grebe and a pair of Great crested grebe who were already nest building in between displaying. A Sparrowhawk was seen flying towards Pot Ridings wood and a Great spotted woodpecker was head calling from Levitt Hagg woods. Along Cadeby mile a Corn bunting was heard singing, last recorded at the Flash in 1994 it’s been some time since one was reported in the surrounding area. Also noted was 2 Yellowhammer, 2 Reed bunting, 10 Linnet, 3 Red-legged partridge, 9 Lapwing and a Blackcap in a local garden.
