The Transition initiative at the University was launched in 2009 by a group of students and has since gained momentum, with both academic and non-academic staff being involved, as well as local residents. We work within the University and local community running carbon reduction projects in response to the threats of climate change and peak oil. Through practical activities and events suggested by people within our community, we help individuals and groups minimise their impact on the planet, become more self-sustaining, and strengthen community ties. In 2012 the group was awarded funding from the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund for the second time, allowing us to employ a mixture of full time and part time staff to work with and for staff and students on specific identified projects in four key transition areas – energy, waste, transport and food. We had a really happy time earlier this week at the Kinross Climate Cafe in their magnificent Community Library. We talked about our reuse, repair and skillshare work in St Andrews and then had some inspiring discussion.

We shared ideas about our 'ideal' shopping mall that only sold preloved items and focused on sharing, loaning, repairing and swapping items. Just imagine! And we also had break out sessions to brainstorm an ideal sustainable, and community-focused winter fayre - hopefully Kinross may establish one too!

The best way to build community is to share resources. Simples.

The organiser sent us an email the following day and she said this (it made our day):

'We were all dazzled by the energising projects and ideas that you developed at St. Andrews - Kinross breathed the fresh air from East Neuk. And we enjoyed being challenged by pulling together some ideas. This morning my head is still buzzing with excitement, great ideas/dreams and the notion that "everything is possible"'.

Happy weekend everyone!

Tomorrow (4th), we’re teaming up with for our very first litter pick event as part of the Fife Climate Festival!

This month, we’re celebrating the Fife Climate Festival. It’s all about community climate action in Fife, bringing people together through culture, creativity, and connection. Now in its fourth year, the festival runs throughout June 2026, with events across Fife.

Join us from 12 to 1 pm to help clean up the green spaces and hedges around East Sands. The birds and insects will be delighted to have a cleaner habitat! We'll MEET at The Cheesy Toast Shack at 12 pm. We'll bring litter picks!

We're so grateful to all the students who donated their unwanted clothes, books, kitchen items, bedding and so much more, before they left town for the summer break. Thank you!

We are now busy sorting everything so that new and returning students can preorder our preloved sustainable bedding bundles, and enjoy picking up all their student essentials at the annual Big Give Away in Freshers' Week.

Our St AndReuse partner charity the St Andrews Environmental Network have been able to source bedding and other essentials for their work supporting households in need. Local schools have also benefited from toys, games and stationery for their fundraising summer fayres, and the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences have been able to restock on outdoor clothing and boots to lend to their students doing fieldwork.

Unfortunately so much still ends up in the skips and bins. But if you love what we do, then please spread the word and encourage everyone you know to join our local sharing economy!

We're excited to meet the Kinross community at Kinross-shire Climate Cafe! We'll be sharing our work at Transition and leading an interactive session on Reuse, Repair, and Upcycling. Can't wait to hear everyone's ideas and perspectives! 🙂

Tomorrow we have our Climate Cafe meeting. 7pm - 8:45pm. Loch Leven Community Campus Library. Bring your own cup. We'll provide the drinks and biscuits.

Transition University of St Andrews will talk at the Climate Cafe about their successful reuse, upcycling, and repair initiatives in the community that encourage people to join the sharing economy. These include their Reuse Store, Repair Cafe, Skillshares, Toolshare, and large events like the winter and summer fayres focused on sharing, learning new skills, and sustainability. These bring many different people together, build a positive community, and help reduce consumption.

We were absolutely thrilled to see Leela at Transition last week and to hear what she has been up to since graduating from the University last year! She was the co-chair of our steering group for the last couple of years, and her ideas and work she contributed were SO inspiring. It is always a delight to hear from our students and see where the next chapter takes them. Good luck Leela💚

One of our new hedgerows is already offering shelter and protection to nesting eider ducks! Delighted to see quite a few mums ensconced between the rows of planting at Castlecliffe. We wanted to share this good news: your support with all our green initiatives is already supporting wildlife! 🦆

We will be doing some additional wildflower seed sowing at Castlecliffe this Wednesday 27 May 1-2pm to fill in some bare patches. Helping hands very welcome. Spaces are limited to a small group as we don't want to disturb the nesting birds. Register and more information at https://transitionsta.org/event/wildflower-seed-sowing-at-castlecliffe/.
