The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards

The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. Scotlands Cavalry. Second to None This page is the home of Scotland's most senior and only cavalry Regiment.

The official page of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards at home, in barracks and on Operations. Formed in 1971 from the amalgamation of the 3rd Carabiniers and the Royal Scots Greys, the Regiment traces its roots back to 1678 when three Troops of Scottish Dragoons were raised. Famous for their grey horses the Regiment prides itself on it's unique grey berets. The capbadge, of the Eagle and Ca

rbines, is a combination of the two capbadges of the antecedent Regiments. The Eagle is an impression of the Napoleonic Eagle, captured from Napoleon's Grande Armee at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Napoleon described the Regiment of the day as "those terrible men on grey horses". The Eagle and Carbine is set on black cloth, when worn on the berets of the soldiers and officers of the Regiment; this is a sign of mourning for the death of Tsar Nicholas II in 1917, who was serving as Colonel-in-Chief at the time of his ex*****on. We have been involved in almost every campaign the British Army has been in since 1700 and our battle honours include Waterloo, Balaklava and more recently the First Gulf War of 1991 and Iraq 2003. Today’s soldiers have much to live up to but are always determined to be Second To None. The regiment, based in Leuchars, Fife, Scotland, is a light cavalry regiment that specialises in reconnaissance. It uses light vehicles such as the Jackal 2 and the Coyote tactical support vehicle to operate in front of their comrades, monitoring enemy forces and sending information back to commanders.

On Monday, the Regiment conducted a parade to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of the Battle of Nunshigum. A battle highlighting the capabilities required of a soldier, at any rank, to step up and take command should the situation require it.

In April 1944 tanks of the 3rd Carabiniers’ B Squadron supported an infantry assault by the 1st Dogras on Japanese hilltop positions at Nunshigum, north of Imphal. The tanks had to ascend the steep terrain slowly, with their commanders leaning out of the turrets to see where they were going. Vulnerable to attack from above, the tanks were stopped in their tracks. After all the 3rd Carabiniers' officers had been killed, Squadron Sergeant-Major William Craddock, and Subedar Ranbir Singh of the Dogras, led their men to outflank the Japanese positions and capture the ridge.

SCOTS DG troops training on the Castlemartin Ranges.

As part of a six-week training package, the regiment sharpened mounted marksmanship skills, firing the 12.7mm (.50 cal) and 40mm gr***de machine gun.

Building speed, accuracy, and confidence on these weapon systems is essential to our role as Brigade reconnaissance.

Second to none.

Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) Grieve.

We are proud to welcome our new RSM, WO1 Grieve. Having joined the Regiment in 2006, he brings with him an outstanding breadth of experience, including a distinguished two-year posting at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

He assumes the appointment following the departure of WO1 Laing, whom we thank for his dedicated service as he leaves the Army.

We wish our new RSM every success in the role.

SCOTS DG have completed Exercise ALPINE EAGLE. A Ski Foundation 1 trip to Les Deus Alps, France. This saw personnel from across the regiment take their first dip into Army Adventure Training Skiing.
