The outcome of the US Presidential Election will have profound implications for freedom- not just in the United States, but across the globe.

Both Joe Biden and Donald Trump have their fair share of admirable yet negative qualities.

This is a decision for the American people to make, however, it is clear that whoever wins must prioritise making America’s recovery from Covid-19 a fruitful and swift one.

A solution must be brokered which recognises the threat posed by the virus but which also recognises the need for economic dynamism as a way out of this malaise.

The facts are now clear: full lockdowns don’t work and are futile.

The next American president must set an example by showing that Covid-19 can be curbed by targeted and rational action which protects the elderly and vulnerable whilst allowing the economy to be open and move forward.

Freedom is at stake. Let’s hope the next president can set an example for the world to follow.

The Government’s response to Covid-19 has posed big questions about liberty and about what the role of the state should be.

It’s interesting that a seemingly ‘Conservative’ government has introduced many measures which appear to be somewhat draconian and overbearing.

We should all play our part in tackling the virus, however, excessive force harnessed by state actors should at the very least face scrutiny and be questioned!

Lockdown fines are 'unclear and ambiguous,' with enforcement having a 'disproportionate impact,' on young men from BAME backgrounds, a committee of MPs has heard.

The ongoing Covid-19 crisis poses big questions about liberty and freedom. We all must take action against this deadly virus; it is our duty.

However, we must never lose sight of freedom. This crisis has opened a new chapter in global history. People are beginning to question the role of the state and the influence it should enjoy.

Nonetheless, isolation is a time for reflection and study. It was depressing to find that in 2019, the United Kingdom was ranked 4th worst out of 28 European Nations for freedom in the Nanny State Index.

The metrics which judge liberty in this index may not be the most puritanical in this age!

Nonetheless, this is an interesting tool to gauge the extent of freedom across Europe. It is a tool that I hope you will harness.

The Nanny State Index (NSI) is a league table of the worst places in the European Union to eat, drink, smoke and v**e. The initiative was launched in March 2016 and was a media hit right across Europe. It is masterminded and led by IEA’s Christopher Snowdon with partners from all over Europe.
