Boscobel House and its famous Royal Oak tree are home to one of the most dramatic adventure stories in English history. Converted into a timber-framed hunting lodge in the 1620s by the Roman Catholic Giffard family, it was probably intended to be a hiding place for persecuted Catholics. The house provided refuge for the young Charles II forces to flee for his life after defeating at the Battle of

Worcester in 1651.

🏠🌳This Sunday, the farmyard and lanes around Boscobel House, will be filled with the sound of horses and their riders, as members of the Worcestershire Cavalry, the British Horse Society (BHS) and the South Staffordshire and District Bridleways Group commemorate part of King Charles II’s famous escape following his defeat at the Battle of Worcester.
375 years ago, on the 4th September 1651, the young Charles and his trusted entourage, arrived on horseback, in the woodland that surrounded Boscobel House. It was here that he was concealed at White Ladies House, Boscobel and in the boughs of a tree that became known as the Royal Oak.
On Sunday invited riders will retrace some of the route that Charles took, following parts of the Monarch’s Way. Visitors are welcome to watch the group ride out from Boscobel around 10am. The approximately 10-mile circular ride will travel via Chillington Hall, Bishops Wood and White Ladies Priory, returning to Boscobel around 1-1.30pm. No admission ticket is needed to watch the riders from our car park, visit our Stables Coffee Shop for a Cream Tea or browse our shop. Normal admission prices apply should you wish to explore the rest of the site. Please note that parking is free for English Heritage members.
Riders will include members of the Worcestershire Cavalry in period dress and descendants of members of Charles II’s entourage. Visitors to Boscobel House will be able to learn more about the work and road safety campaigning of the British Horse Society and find out about learning to ride from Woodford Riding Stables”
