Burghley House

Burghley House Welcome to beautiful Burghley.
500 years. Ever evolving. Always for everyone.
(2261)

Built between 1555 and 1587, the main part of the House has 35 major rooms on the ground and first floors. There are more than 80 lesser rooms and numerous halls, corridors, bathrooms and service areas. The lead roof extends to three quarters of an acre, restoration and rebuilding of which began in 1983 and took nearly ten years to complete. Visitor facilities include the Orangery Restaurant, Gift

Shop, Garden of Surprises, Sculpture Garden and beautiful walks around the historic parkland laid out by Capability Brown and still occupied by a herd of fallow deer. History can come alive in a single trip whether it is to enjoy a guided tour, take a dog for a walk in the park, see the Teddy Bears' picnic in the Garden of Surprises or take time over lunch in the Orangery.

🚧🌳 As we prepare for September’s Defender Burghley Horse Trials, please be aware that there will be temporary changes to Parkland access between 4 August and 18 September.

The Parkland remains open for visitors to enjoy. However, we’ve introduced an alternative pedestrian route to help keep everyone safe during event site build and deconstruction.

Key dates and details to be aware of:
~ The central pedestrian route through the Parkland will be closed between from 4 August until 18 September.
~ The alternative pedestrian route will be in place from 4 August until 31 August, before reopening between 8 and 18 September during post-event deconstruction.
~ The House, Gardens & Adventure Play will remain open as usual throughout this period, with the exception of the Defender Burghley Horse Trials event dates (Wednesday 2 to Sunday 6 September), when the site will be closed to Burghley visitors.

The alternative route is a beautiful walk from Stamford, taking in views of Lion Bridge, Capability Brown’s Lake and Burghley House itself. Just please be aware that parts of this route are on grass and include some uneven terrain.

We appreciate your understanding and encourage you continue to enjoy the beauty of the Parkland. Free walk-in access and car parking as normal.
