😎 Yesterday, Raph was made to feel very welcome at Springbank Care Home’s summer fete. Despite weeks of drought, the rain had come to try to dampen spirits - but all were having a good time. The staff had gone all out. A wonderful traditional afternoon tea was laid on, and the theme was very much the 1950s - done absolutely superbly, with classic bunting, adverts, and dresses. Oh, and outstanding singers! Raph felt more in a country hotel than a care home.

🐶 Holly was much welcomed by the residents - she enjoyed the attention (and the dropped coronation chicken vol-au-vents - not sure all were 'accidents’!). She was told she'll be welcome back anytime!

Springbank are part of our community, so if you're organising an event or doing something local, pop over or invite them along. They want to get their residents involved as much as possible!

⚠️ YET MORE FLY-TIPPING 🏥🚁

Incredibly frustrating that yet again we see fly-tipping in the ward - and shockingly, this time on the helipad site for Airedale Hospital!

It’s unbelievable that people would illegally dump waste in the first place, but to do it on the field where the hospital helipad is could put lives in danger.

I was pleased to meet Bradford Council’s environmental enforcement team on site, who are now investigating. The hospital, whose land it is, are aware and will now have to arrange for it to be cleared.

🚧 Pavement Repairs

Pleased to see that following a resident reporting the state of the pavement to us on Ings Road in Silsden, the team have been out and sorted some of it.

There is plenty more to do across Silsden, Steeton and Eastburn and we have already reported lots of other uneven sections.

🚓 Those who break the rules must face consequences.

Yet travellers are getting away with unauthorised encampments, like we have seen in Silsden, that would never be tolerated elsewhere. This is unfair.

The next Conservative Government will end the two-tier treatment of traveller lawbreaking and ensure the rules are enforced fairly.

Our plan will give police and councils stronger powers to remove unauthorised encampments, tackle trespass and stop the abuse of retrospective planning applications.

We will also give police powers to remove trespassers at a landowner’s request, prevent travellers from returning to sites indefinitely and remove the requirement for an alternative pitch to be available before action can be taken.

One set of rules. Fair enforcement. Stronger powers for those responsible for enforcing the law.

👂IT IS TIME LOCAL PEOPLE WERE LISTENED TO

At the last meeting of Bradford Council the Conservative group were pleased to put forward a motion on local decision making and access to services, Cllr Raph Cohn spoke in support of this.

Time and again, residents across our area tell us the same thing: decisions about our community are being made too far away, by people too remote from the communities affected. Parking charges, planning applications, the closure of our Household Waste Recycling Centres - too often these are decided centrally, with little regard for local circumstances.

That isn't good enough. Bradford is one of the largest and most diverse districts in England, and our towns and villages each have their own distinct character and needs. Silsden, Steeton and Eastburn are not the same as the city centre and they shouldn't be governed as though they are.

The Conservative motion called for real devolution of power to Area Committees and, where they want it, our town and parish councils. That means:

🅿️ Local control over parking charges and permit schemes
💷 A fair share of locally-generated income staying in the area that raised it
🌳 Greater say over parks, street scene and community safety
🗑️ Replacing the HWRC sites lost in Ilkley and Queensbury
🏗️ Restoring a local planning panel for Keighley, Ilkley and Shipley

Unfortunately our original motion was not passed but Cllr Cohn was pleased to speak in favour of such important changes.

We’ll always fight to make sure our communities' voices are heard - not overruled from afar.

🚨 ACTION ON SPEEDING AND ANTI-SOCIAL DRIVING ON THE A629 🚓

Following a written question from Cllr Peter Kirk, the council has confirmed that speed cameras remain on track to be installed on the A629 between Keighley and the Silsden/Steeton roundabout.

We've been contacted time and again by residents about vehicles racing along this stretch - loud exhausts roaring through the early hours and disturbing people right across the valley.

This is welcome news. We'll be keeping a close eye on progress, and once the cameras are in, we'll be watching to make sure they actually make a difference. Of course we will continue to push the police to have a visible presence to deter crime and anti-social driving.
