Jubilee weekend is fast approaching and for all those enjoying the long weekend with a BBQ here's some safety tips from North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service - ๐๐ญโ๏ธ
Who loves a bank holiday BBQ? ๐
You are not alone and this week we can look forward to not one but TWO bank holidays โ double the excuse for an outdoor meal!
Thankfully, most of you know how to use a barbecue safely.
We know this because we rarely get called to a fire caused by a barbecue.
However, we all make mistakes and misjudgements โ especially when alcohol is involved.
So, here are a couple of points to keep you safe this barbecue seasonโฆ
โข If you are away from home ONLY use barbecues in designated areas
โข If you are in charge of the cooking maybe leave the alcohol until after you have finished
โข Keep your barbecue away from sheds, fences, trees, shrubs and garden waste
โข Never leave your barbecues or cooking unattended
โข Never use a barbecue indoors
โข Keep a bucket of water, sand or a garden hose nearby for emergencies
โข Always follow the safety instructions provided
โข Only use recognised lighters or start fuels on coal โ never use petrol or paraffin to start of revive your barbecue
โข Empty ashes onto bare garden soil, not into dustbins or wheelie bins. If they are hot, they can melt the plastic and start a fire.
Gas barbecues are slightly differentโฆ
โข After cooking, turn the gas supply off first, and then the barbecue control to stop any gas from leaking
โข Make sure the tap is turned off before changing the gas cylinder
โข Make sure all joints are tightened, safe and secure
โข Store gas cylinders outside, away from direct sunlight and frost.
