A Stevenage resident has been supported in an outstanding feat of strength and kindness by our Environment and Leisure staff in a bid to raise funds for two local children..by running a marathon carrying a Stevenage Borough Council wheelie bin!

Daniel Fairbrother will be running the 13 miles of the St Albans half marathon on 14 June with the Stevenage Borough Council wheelie bin to raise money for two children of family friends with cerebral palsy. Not only will Daniel be carrying the bin but he’s also planning to run it loaded with an extra 30 kg; the weight of the two children he’ll be fundraising for!

If you’d like to support Daniel and find out more about why he’s raising money for Harper and Marlowe, please visit:

☀️We all enjoy sunny weather, but even as the heat declines, the power of the sun is still increasing as we move into summer.

Keep a close eye on the older people, young children, ill or expecting mums in your life.

Keep cool at home – by closing curtains on windows that face the sun and opening windows at night when it's cooler outside than in.

Be sun-savvy when out and about – travel with bottled water, use a SPF 30 or over sun screen and wear UV-protection sunglasses. Take extra care to keep children sun safe as they will burn more easily than adults.

Hope you're enjoying this amazing weather especially out and about in Stevenage and our parks but take care amid what is a very strong sun.

The government has issued an amber health heat warning, which it does when adverse temperatures are likely to impact on the health and wellbeing of the population. Whilst the warm weather may be enjoyable for many, it is important to take extra care in the heat and sun to stay well.

Some tips to stay safe in the heat:
➡️try to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm, when the UV rays are strongest
➡️avoid physical exertion in the hottest parts of the day
➡️drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol
➡️walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat, if you have to go out in the heat
➡️make sure you take water with you if you are travelling
➡️stay cool indoors: close curtains on rooms that face the sun to keep indoor spaces cooler and remember it may be cooler outdoors than indoors
➡️wear light coloured, loose clothing
➡️if you have a chronic medical condition and / or take regular medications, be mindful of the effect the heat may have on you and seek medical advice if you feel you need to
➡️look out for others - the elderly, people with underlying health conditions, and those who live alone are particularly at risk

🌳 Stevenage High Street: Tree removal update

You may notice that a tree outside Simmons bakery has been removed today.

Following a joint inspection by arboriculture officers from Stevenage Borough Council and Hertfordshire County Council, the tree was found to be unstable due to its root system growing close to the surface beneath the paving. This meant it could present a safety risk to people using the area.

The tree has been removed in a controlled and sensitive way to keep residents, businesses and visitors safe.

🌱 What happens next?
A replacement tree will be planted in the autumn once works in this area are complete. When finished, the High Street will have more trees than before.

Thank you for your understanding while essential safety work is carried out.

Have your say on the emerging Healthy Stevenage Strategy

We are developing a new strategy for 2026 to 2031 to help improve health and wellbeing, reduce health inequalities and support residents to live healthier, more independent lives.

The strategy focuses on prevention, partnership working and key local priorities including healthy weight, mental wellbeing, ageing well, dementia support and creating healthier places.

We want to hear from residents, community groups, partners and local organisations to help shape the final strategy.

Complete the consultation survey here before 7 June: https://forms.office.com/e/DfM4qwjrQe
