STOP READING THIS STAND UP GO FOR A WALK!
The Live Longer Better in Hertfordshire open day at the university was inspiring, particularly the keynote speaker Christine Hobson. A former head teacher, she only started being active after she retired and now has over 130 marathons under her belt.

The message is that you stay physically active so you can get out of a car easily, put a suitcase in an overhead locker, reach a high shelf, get up stairs - ie continue to enjoy life.

Although sadly nothing will improve my badminton skills.

Hats off to &ActivityPartnership for all they do, good to see Age Friendly: Live Better Hertfordshire and Hertfordshire Health Walks there as well.

Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union on this day in 1991. Who could have foreseen the current dark days? Hertfordshire County Council officers and members have provided various kinds of support, we ourselves have housed Ukrainian refugees in our home which has been a real privilege and a fascinating learning experience.

The county council has signed a partnership agreement with the Sumy city region in north-east Ukraine and this video is a contribution to a message of support to our colleagues in their fight for freedom.

Such a relaxed and joyful atmosphere at Hertfordshire Pride yesterday. Proud to represent Hertfordshire County Council. Great that so many county council services were represented. Here are some random pictures of a lovely day.

Hertfordshire County Music is the best. The incomparable Peter Stark (think BBC’s ‘Maestro’) had been principal conductor of the Herts County Youth Orchestra for 33 years and has taken them to glorious heights. Last night’s concert in Hitchin had a deliberately international flavour with unusual pieces by Enescu, Smetana and Lutoslawski. Just a total joy.

When the CYO went to Prague, the local media said it was the finest youth orchestra to have visited the city. When they performed in Tours in France they were sitting in the aisles and there was a standing ovation after almost every movement.

We need to cherish and promote our centres of true excellence. Encore, bravo cubed to

Really proud to have raised the Pride flag at Hertfordshire County Council’s head office in Stevenage today. We must always cherish and promote the diversity of our council and county and call out prejudice whenever and wherever. I hope to see you at Herts Pride in Cassiobury Park in Watford this coming Saturday.

Roll up, roll up, roll up! It’s another Hertfordshire Health Walk - this time in Hitchin and led by energetic Jan Gates. A lovely route by the clear waters of the River Purwell.

So important to say thank you to Hertfordshire County Council’s volunteers - in this case some of the 600+ local residents who help keep our footpaths clear and look after our rivers. The bonus was holding the event at the Woodland Trust’s Heartwood Forest arboretum and getting a guided tour by Brian Legg. The arboretum contains all sixty of the plants and shrubs native to the British Isles - ie here before Britain was separated from the continent. Fascinating.

Another week, another health walk - this time Hatfield led by Marian Hurle followed by a cup of tea at Erol’s Cafe. It’s not just the exercise but the chatter of conversation which is so uplifting.
Hat tip to the Hertfordshire Health Walks team.

There’s something amiss with a world where we need food banks but sadly we do need them. So inspirational to meet the volunteers packing the boxes at the St Albans and District Foodbank HQ in Redbourn and their charismatic leader Rukia Augustine. There is almost certainly a huge amount of untapped demand so we need to spread the word and emphasise that there is no need to be ashamed when you require help.
