01/04/2026

The government has announced that as from 6th April 2026 the 2 child benefit limit will no longer apply.

This means that for every child born a child element will be paid through universal credit.

Unfortunately in some instances the increase in child elements may not result in additional income as if any transitional protection is in payment as the additional child elements will be deducted from this amount in the first instance.

Another scenario is that the increase in child elements could result in the benefit cap being applicable. If this applies then universal credit should detail this information under ‘deductions’ in the UC statement. The Scottish Government has increased the discretionary housing payment fund to mitigate the benefit cap so if universal credit states ‘benefit cap’ an application to Stirling Council online https://www.stirling.gov.uk/council-tax/discretionary-housing-payment/discretionary-housing-payment-application/ and complete form re additional income for same as benefit cap reduction amount.

Should you have any queries or require assistance regarding above, please do not hesitate to contact myself (Tracy Doran) or my colleague Kieron O’Hara on 01786 446066.
