Our hardy volunteers and reserve officers have had a busy summer searching out the invasive Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) from the Loch Lomond reserve. Balsam loves the damp areas along the wee burns and hidden ditches and enjoys nestling amongst the tangle of tree trunks and branches.

Native to the Western Himalayas and introduced in 1839 for its ornamental value, it outcompetes native plants by forming dense stands and leaving vulnerable bare ground after its winter die back. Big nectar producers they are more attractive to pollinating insects, leaving native flowering plants less visited and therefore less effectively pollinated.

The best time to uproot the balsam is before their flowers turn to seed. This can be tricky without their showy pink flowers relying on spotting the three terminal jaggy leaves at the top of the plant.

The seed pods are explosive, spring loaded and fire the seeds up to seven metres away (each pod having around 16 seeds, and plants having around 800 in total), they can also spread by sending out roots from their stem nodes.
