Empowering Scottish Communities to Deliver a Circular Economy

Circular Communities Scotland is a membership organisation dedicated to supporting the establishment of a circular economy in Scotland. We represent and support repair, reuse and recycling charities and social enterprises across the country. Our members prevent valuable products and materials from ending up in landfill, create local jobs, economic opportunities, and help promote and create social

and environmental justice in their communities. Circular Communities Scotland also supports our projects, the Share and Repair Network and our Reuse Consortium.

Circular Communities Scotland is hiring for our new CEO.

This is an opportunity to lead a respected national membership organisation at a significant time for Scotland’s circular economy. The next CEO will help Circular Communities Scotland strengthen its member voice, build sustainable income, deepen strategic partnerships and represent the practical contribution of reuse, repair, recycling and community-led action to national environmental and social outcomes.

Our Chair of the Board, Naomi Johnson MBA says:

"Our organisation is built on trust and integrity, openness and community and we are currently also leading work that focuses on diversity and inclusion.

We are looking for a new CEO with similar values, who is passionate about the potential of the circular economy in Scotland’s voluntary sector, and the human stories behind community reuse. Reuse is at an exciting juncture and we are keen to appoint someone who can operate at a strategic level, creating opportunities to benefit Circular Communities Scotland, our members, communities and the environment."

Location: Hybrid, 2 days in the Stirling office.
Salary: £62,000 to £67,000 per annum, FTE.
Standard hours: 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Some evening and weekend working will be required, for which time off in lieu is given.
Closing date: Wednesday, 23rd September
First virtual interview: Thursday, 8th October

Research by Oxfam Scotland found that more than half of Scots (51%) regret at least one clothing purchase from the past year - with around a third of Scottish wardrobes going unworn in the same time frame, wasting enough water to provide 90,000 people with a lifetime supply of drinking water.

The polling has been released as Oxfam launches its new report, The State of Style 2026. Circular Communities Scotland is pleased to contribute to the conversation reported in The Herald Scotland and The Scotsman with our Circular Economy Policy Officer Becky Kenton-Lake quoted as saying:

“At a time when fast fashion encourages us to treat clothing as disposable, it's more important than ever to make choosing second-hand and repairing clothes as easy and accessible as buying new.

"The Circular Economy Act means we have a commitment in legislation to move beyond simply managing waste and instead focus on preventing it. Ministers should use the powers available to them to set ambitious circular economy targets, stop businesses disposing of unsold goods, and ensure everyone is able to access reuse and repair services locally.

"Building a circular economy isn't just good for the environment. It would help to create local jobs, save households money at a time when many budgets remain under pressure, and breathe new life into our high streets."

We were delighted that Sanne Dijkstra-Downie MSP visited our member Fresh Start earlier this week, and heard about the incredible impact they are having in their community.

Our Circular Economy Policy Officer, Becky Kenton-Lake, was also able to share our suggestions for how national policy can better support organisations like Fresh Start, and maximise the environmental, social and economic benefits of reuse.

Explore Scotland's community reuse sector with our Circular Communities Scotland Network Stories.

This month we're celebrating Trust in Fife - Cairn Centre, which has recently launched it's first online shop.

The website launch was reported in The Courier, which spoke to Caroline McCall, CEO of Trust in Fife:

“Getting the store online is something that’s been a vision of mine for a long, long time, but until recently we never really had the capacity or the manpower to be able to do it.”

“Our aim is to offer great quality and great value. Because of that we get a lot of turnaround. As items don’t tend to stay in stock too long the online store is the perfect way to keep up to date with what we have and find what you’re looking for.”

Moving from a traditional shop to operating online as well can be a daunting process, but Trust in Fife has shown how it can be done. Every purchase from the Cairn Centre, both in person and online, supports local homelessness.
