📚🗺️👣 A literary history map of Stirling has been launched to celebrate the city’s wealth of mythical legends and contemporary writing greats.

The map offers six routes across Stirlingshire for literature buffs to trace the steps of Scotland’s great writers and the sites that inspired them.

Sites range from the Golden Lion Hotel on King Street, where Robert Burns infamously penned ‘Stirling Lines’, to the Trossachs Trail which was captured in verse by Sir Walter Scott in ‘The Lady of the Lake’.

Created by staff from Stirling Council Libraries service, the map brings together walking, reading and local history.

✅Visitor numbers to Stirling have surged beyond pre-pandemic levels, with a new draft tourism and events strategy aiming to build on that momentum and strengthen the region’s position as one of Scotland’s leading visitor destinations.

A refreshed Stirling tourism and events plan 2026–2031 has been supported by Stirling Council’s finance, economy and culture committee, setting out a long-term vision to grow the visitor economy, support sustainable tourism and deliver a vibrant year-round events programme across the Stirling Council area.

Latest figures show that 4.662 million people visited Stirling in 2024 which is an increase of more than 10% on the previous year and higher than the previous peak recorded in 2017. The sector generated a total economic impact of £712.4 million for the region, with direct visitor expenditure rising to £506.6 million.

💬 There are only a few days left for residents, sports clubs and employers across Stirling to have their say on the future of sport, physical activity and wellbeing in the area, with online surveys closing at midnight on 31 May.

The consultation, led by Stirling Council, will help shape how people access and experience physical activity, leisure and wellbeing opportunities across Stirling in the years ahead and will inform a new strategy.

The consultation forms part of a wider review into how leisure and wellbeing services can better meet the needs of local communities.

The new sport, physical activity and health strategy aims to create a healthier, more active Stirlingshire where everyone regardless of age, ability or background has the opportunity to move more and feel well.

Convener of Stirling Council’s Community Wellbeing Committee, Cllr Brian Hambly said: “We share the national vision of a Scotland where more people are more active more often. Taking part in this important consultation before the deadline is a step towards achieving that and shaping how sport and activity can work across our area.

“Whether you are a resident, are involved in sport or leisure clubs or an employer in the area, you can have your say on the strengths of what is currently out there and also help show the gaps that need to be addressed.”

“We want to hear from everyone across Stirling, active or not. Your feedback will help us create a Stirling where being active is easy, enjoyable and part of everyday life.”

💬 Residents, community groups and other key stakeholders are being asked for their feedback on another key part of Stirling’s Local Development Plan (LDP) as it continues to take shape.

This part of the consultation will gather people’s views on the plan’s spatial strategy and the site options that are currently being considered for inclusion.

The spatial strategy will dictate where and how growth, development and land-use change will happen in the Stirling Council area (except Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park), directing investment and housing to the most appropriate locations.

The site options shown in this round of the consultation come from two places:

👉 Sites submitted by landowners and developers during the Call for Sites, which ran from August to October 2025.

👉 Sites already identified for development in the current Stirling Local Development Plan that have not yet started and therefore need to be reassessed to decide whether they should be included in the next plan.

A number of drop-in events have been arranged to support this part of the consultation:

➡ Blairlogie – Wednesday 27 May (1-6pm) in Blairlogie Reading Room
➡ Gargunnock – Thursday 28 May (2-6.30pm) in Gargunnock Community Centre
➡ Plean, including Bannockburn and Cowie – Tuesday 2 June (11am-3pm) in Balfour Community Centre
➡ Bridge of Allan – Wednesday 3 June (1-6pm) in the Allan Centre
➡ Doune and Deanston – Thursday 4 June (1.45pm-5.45pm) in the Rural Hall
➡ Dunblane - Wednesday 10 June (1.30pm-6.30pm) in the Dunblane Centre
➡ Fallin (including Throsk) - Thursday 11 June (2pm-6pm) at Fallin Library
➡ Thornhill - Friday 12 June (3.30pm-7pm) at Thornhill Community Hall
➡ Stirling and localities - Tuesday 16 June (1.30pm-6.30pm) at Old Viewforth
➡ Buchlyvie – Wednesday 17 June (12.15-6.30pm) in Buchlyvie Village Hall
➡ Killearn (including Balfron) - Thursday 18 June (1pm-5pm) in Killearn Village Hall
➡ Balfron (including Killearn) - Thursday 18 June (6pm-8pm) in Balfron High School

✅ The 12 members of the first Stirling Visitor Levy Advisory Forum have now been confirmed following a selection process that involved the newly appointed independent Chair Paul Mooney.

Those appointed to the forum are drawn from both Stirling’s rural and urban areas and bring a broad range of expertise from the tourism industry, communities and other key sectors.

Accommodation providers, tourism organisations, visitor attractions, communities, heritage and conversation groups, and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park are among the wide range of stakeholders represented.

Individuals will use their experience to review, discuss and advise Stirling Council on the operation of the visitor levy scheme and how its proceeds should be invested to benefit Stirling’s communities and visitor economy.

The first meeting of the forum is scheduled for 10 June. It is expected that forum will meet at least twice a year and will be supported by Stirling Council officers.

✅ Community groups across Stirling are gearing up to join in a special clean-up event during the last weekend in May.

The clean-up drive, which will take place on the weekend of Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 May, will support the ongoing work of the council, community groups and other litter-picking organisations and individuals throughout the Stirling area to make neighbourhoods clean and welcoming.

Stirling Council will supply a limited amount of litter callipers and refuse bags to the volunteer groups, either dropping the equipment/bags at prearranged points or they can be collected at Springkerse Depot, Stirling.

The Council’s Neighbourhood Services teams will work concurrently over the two days to collect the filled sacks and transport them directly to the Polmaise waste facility for disposal.

Local residents who wish to get involved can make contact via the council's dedicated e-mail address - [email protected]

🐺 Throwback to the inaugural Culture Night Stirling held at the beginning of the month which has come in for further praise in the weeks following the event which brought the city centre and surrounding areas to life.

Stirling Council Leader Cllr Susan McGill said: “Culture Night Stirling was a brilliant occasion and it was great to see so many people getting into the spirit of the festival and taking part in as many of the free activities as possible.

“I was delighted to see the city centre so busy with people coming from far and wide to enjoy the events and deliver a boost to our night-time economy.

“My thanks to everyone who delivered such a successful new festival for Stirling and I’m excited to see the plans for next year already. We have an incredible variety of events taking place in Stirling underpinned with some of the best venues in Scotland which makes us an excellent destination for visitors who wish to explore the area.”

Stirling Lord Provost Rosemary Fraser said: “I was thrilled that so many of our talented local artists and community groups participated in the inaugural Culture Night Stirling and helped make it such a success.

“We’re home to a wealth of creative talent which was on display for everybody who came along on the night The interactive element at some of the activities really added to the festival and I enjoyed trying my hand at Japanese Calligraphy.
