The railway modellers based at the Elmwood Centre received some fantastic news this week — they’ve been nominated for the King’s Award for Voluntary Service.

The club is the oldest model railway group in the Tees Valley, with roots stretching all the way back to 1948. Club secretary John Maddon was over the moon when the nomination came through.

Like so many community groups, they struggled through Covid, but they’ve come out the other side stronger than ever. Membership is thriving, their layouts are looking better than ever, and they now run a brilliant junior mentorship programme to bring the next generation into the craft.

They wont find out if theyve won the award until November but until then, everything is crossed

✨ Did you know? ✨

Hartburn’s much loved Elmwood Community Centre has a history as rich as the community it serves today.

🏡 Built in 1873, Elmwood began life as the grand family home of local grocer Lewis Dodshon. Over the years it welcomed several notable residents including Olympic rower Col. H. E. Kitching.

🔬 During World War II, ICI moved in, transforming the house into a research laboratory from 1939 until the 1950s.

👥 In 1952, Elmwood took on a new purpose as a community centre, becoming a place for local families to learn, gather and grow together.

💛 Fast‑forward to 2014, when the building transferred to the OnSite Community Building Trust. This opened the door to new funding, fresh ideas and a real revival of community activity from long‑running dance classes and an outstanding playgroup to vintage fairs and a cosy community cafe.

👻 And for those who love a good story… there have even been reports of spooky goings on over the years, adding a little extra mystery to this already fascinating building.
