Would you like to say thank you to one of our volunteers?

There’s still time to nominate them in our Caring Better Together staff awards.

Our volunteers play a vital role across University Hospitals Tees. From welcoming patients and helping them find their way around our hospitals to offering companionship and emotional reassurance and helping them return home safely.

Is there a volunteer who:

"We'd worked together and been friends for a very long time, so it's great to be volunteering together. We have a really good rapport and make a great team."

Two retired friends and colleagues are encouraging others to consider volunteering, after discovering a new sense of purpose and fulfilment volunteering at the University Hospital of North Tees.

Jackie Kendall, 65 and Jean Scott, 73, both from Stockton, now volunteer together as hospital welcomers, after both experiencing the challenge of transitioning from busy careers into retirement.

For Jackie, who retired in May 2025, volunteering was something she had considered long before leaving work.

After encouraging her former colleague Jean to consider volunteering as well, Jackie was delighted when she found herself working side by side with Jean once again.

Congratulations to Catrina Madden and Joann Coles - two of our newly qualified batch of allied health professionals who have each completed a degree apprenticeship programme.

Patients are already benefitting from the skills of four diagnostic radiographers, three physiotherapists and one occupational therapist who were all existing employees. The hard working group combined workplace learning with university study to gain their professional qualifications.

Catrina said: “I’d been a support worker since 2019 and the opportunity to do the course was too good to pass up.

“Having a family means there was no way I could stop working to study, so being able to do a day at university once a week while working made it possible.

“It was hard work having to juggle work, home and study but it was definitely worth it.”

Joann commented: “It’s quite daunting to be making the decisions, but all of our colleagues are very supportive.

“At the moment, having only been qualified for a few weeks, I just want to be confident and competent in the role and see what happens in the future.

“I feel I’m off to a good start and am enjoying the job.”

Congratulations to our newly qualified colleagues and best of luck for the future.

University Hospitals Tees offers its sincere condolences following the tragic incident that took place over the weekend.

Our thoughts are with the families, friends and loved ones of those who have lost their lives.

This deeply distressing incident has touched communities across the region and we will continue to provide support to anyone impacted by the tragedy.

We also extend our sympathies to our colleagues at Cleveland Police following the loss of two officers who served their community with pride, courage and commitment.
