Healthwatch Stockton-on-Tees

Healthwatch Stockton-on-Tees We are the independent champion for people who use health and care services across Stockton. Healthwatch Stockton-on-Tees is a part of Healthwatch England.

We are the independent champion for people who use health and social care services. We listen to what people tell us about the services they use locally and want to know what is working well and what needs to be improved. Where necessary we have a statutory power to go into any health or social care premises to see at first hand the service being delivered. We can talk to patients/carers and to st

aff members to gather more information. We share the information we gather with those who have the power to make change happen. We also help people find the information they need about services in their area.

If you receive an NHS screening invitation, don't ignore it – book it.

NHS screening programmes are designed to identify potential health problems before symptoms appear, giving you the best chance of receiving treatment early if needed.

Screening is offered to different groups of people at different stages of life and can help detect conditions such as certain cancers, abdominal aortic aneurysms and other health concerns before they become more serious.

Most screening tests are quick, simple and free through the NHS.

Even if you feel well, it's important to attend when invited. Screening can provide reassurance or help identify problems early, when treatment is often more effective.

If you've received a screening invitation, take a few moments to book your appointment. It could make a significant difference to your health and wellbeing.

Recently, we welcomed Colleen Metcalfe to our Board. As a Deaf person, Colleen brings valuable lived experience, insight and perspective to our discussions.

Wanting to ensure she could fully participate in her first Board meeting, we trialled a digital speech-to-text app to support communication.

Like many organisations, we saw technology as part of the solution. What we quickly learned was that accessibility is about much more than technology alone.

Our case study explores what we learned from appointing Colleen to our executive board—and how her lived experience helped highlight barriers to inclusion that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.

NHS England is now rolling out HPV self-testing kits for women who have fallen behind on their cervical screening.

The free kits can be used at home, making it easier for more women to complete potentially lifesaving checks to help prevent cervical cancer.

Eligible women will start receiving invitations, so check your phone, your email or your post to see if you qualify.

If you're invited, you'll be able to order a free kit through the NHS App or your NHS online account.

Christopher Akers-Belcher, Regional Coordinator for the Healthwatch North East and North Cumbria (NENC) Network, was recently invited to present the network's achievements to the NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB).

We’re proud to see the impact of Healthwatch NENC recognised by the ICB.

Across 14 local Healthwatch organisations, more than 86,500 conversations with local people have helped shine a light on what’s working, what isn’t, and where change is needed.

From improving access to NHS dentistry and primary care, to influencing regional programmes and national policy discussions, local people’s experiences are helping shape the future of health and care across our region.

A huge part of this success comes from collaboration — bringing communities together and making sure their voices reach the people making decisions.

Thank you to everyone who has shared their experience with Healthwatch. Your voice really can make a difference.

Would you like to use the NHS App, but need someone to manage it for you? Are you a parent or carer who supports someone to manage their health?

Did you know 'Proxy Access' is a way for family, carers and parents to use the NHS App on someone else's behalf?

You both need to be registered at the same practice, and the level of access can be tailored to individual need.
