It's now illegal to let your dog off the lead on ‘open access land’ (moorland, forests, lakes, or beaches) in England and Wales until August 1, experts say, as people who fail to keep dogs on a lead between 1 March and 31 July risk a maximum £1,000 fine. This rule is in place to protect ground-nesting birds and livestock and keep dogs safe.

It's just under a week to go until the Well Dressing Ceremony at St Cleer Holy Well and Cross, and we can't wait to celebrate with the local community! This year’s event is particularly significant as it will celebrate the site’s removal from the Heritage at Risk Register in November 2023.

The event is set to take place on Friday 3rd May from 10.15am – 11.15am and is open to the general public. It will involve the children from St Cleer Primary School and the local community. The blessing of the well will take place in Cornish and English, with short prayers by the local Curate and singing. Cornish dancing will also take place.

Everyone is welcome and booking is not required.

Thought to date from the late 15th or early 16th century, St Cleer Holy Well is a Scheduled Monument and also Listed Grade One – a demarcation earned by only 2.5% of listed buildings and marking it out as nationally important.

Kit Hill is lowland heath similar to Dartmoor… Dogs should be under close control during bird nesting season and with>80000 dog visits each year to the Hill that could be an awful lot of disturbance

It may seem an unlikely place to build a nest, but moorland grass and gorse make the perfect hideout for birds to raise their chicks 🐣

Many of Dartmoor’s residents are ground-nesters 🪹. Including Skylarks and Meadow Pipits… these birds can sometimes be tricky to spot, and you don’t always know they are there.

But have you been lucky enough to spot any of the birds on our bird bingo?

from March 1 – July 31 to ensure everyone can appreciate the wonders of Dartmoor, while respecting its wildlife and habitat 💚

Friday 23rd June, 9pm on Kit Hill will see the annual Tansys Golowan, the St John's Eve Bonfire. This is the last of the bonfires that stretch right across the Duchy, traditionally being lit when you see the one before ablaze.
Why not bring a thermos flask, a chair and come and join us?

Yesterday’s controlled burning…traditional swaling to sweeten the Heath…only done in the winter. A patchwork on a 12 year rotation. Fire breaks cut and wetted…water bowser on standby and several fire marshals…area closed to the public. It went really well…always interesting to watch the succession of plants which come back. Thank you to all those who changed their traditional route around the hill

Be prepared today. The south side of the Hill will be closed for swaling…controlled burning
