🔥 Happy Bottle Oven Day!

Today we remember a special moment in Longton and Stoke-on-Trent’s history. On 29 August 1978, the last traditional bottle oven in the Potteries was fired at the Hudson and Middleton potbank on Normacot Road, Longton - right here in my constituency.

At their peak, around 2,000 bottle ovens dominated the Potteries landscape, powering the industry that made Stoke-on-Trent famous around the world.

Since 2018, 29th August has been celebrated as Potteries Bottle Oven Day: a day to celebrate our incredible ceramic heritage and the people who built it. 🏺🔥

A proud part of Longton’s history that we must never forget.

🏠 £442 million to help get people off the streets and into a safe home by Christmas.

This is a really important announcement from this Labour Government.

Getting someone off the street isn’t as simple as handing them a set of keys and walking away. For many people, they also need help with mental health, addiction, finding work or support with day-to-day life so they can keep a roof over their head.

I’m also really pleased to see women sleeping rough getting specific attention. This is something I have been campaigning for, and raised directly with the Prime Minister when he was Mayor of Greater Manchester, and I led a delegation of Stokies to meet with him last year.

The message is simple: everyone deserves a safe place to call home and the support to keep it.

Now we need to make sure this funding delivers for people here in Stoke-on-Trent.

Good news!

🚌 FREE BUS TRAVEL - AROUND THE CLOCK

⏰At the moment, free travel is generally restricted to 9.30am–11pm on weekdays. BUT, from April next year, eligible disabled people will be able to use their concessionary bus passes on any bus, at any time of day.

▶ Whether you need to catch an early bus, get home late, go to work, see family or make an appointment - your bus pass will work.

💷 And with the £2 bus fare cap coming too for all passengers, this Government is making it easier and cheaper to get around.

Really pleased to see this - it's good news for people right across Stoke-on-Trent South!

🏙️ BACKING OUR HIGH STREETS

Our high streets should be places people are proud of, not dominated by v**e stores and empty or run-down premises.

That’s why this Labour Government giving local councils and communities more power over what opens on their high streets. 👇

🎰 More power over gambling premises: councils will have greater ability to respond when there are concerns about too many gambling premises clustering together.

💨 Planning permission for v**e shops & adult gaming centres: new rules will mean councils and local communities get a say before these businesses can open.

🏫 Protecting areas around schools: councils will have stronger powers to stop inappropriate v**e shops opening near schools and prevent clustering.

🚫 Closing the v**e shop loophole: businesses won’t be able to dodge the rules by pretending to be convenience stores when their main business is selling v**es.

👮 Tackling problem premises: Closure Orders will be extended from 6 to 12 months, giving police and councils more time to deal with premises linked to organised crime.

🏪 Better-looking high streets: councils will get practical support to improve shopfronts, signs and the overall appearance of our town centres.

Our high streets belong to the communities who live, work and shop there. Whether it's Longton, Meir, Tunstall or Hanley, local people should have a real say in what their high street looks like. 🌳🏪
