Spode Museum

Spode Museum The Spode Museum Trust is a registered charity established in 1987. Spode has been fortunate that so much remains intact.

The Spode Archive includes some 20,000 ceramic items spanning over 200 years from the late 18th Century to 2008. It also includes some 25,000 engraved copper plates from which transfer prints were made for printed ceramic wares. There are also collections of antique factory tools, furniture and moulds and ¼ million Spode and Copeland documents including watercolour paintings of some 70,000 ceramic

patterns. Because of time span and its near-completeness, the Archive enables unique insight into the history of a world famous factory from the Industrial Revolution to the present, its owners and employees during three centuries and its relevance to the local economy. The ceramics collection is of international standing, and ranges from spectacular items made for the very wealthy and the great 19th Century exhibitions to a definitive collection of Spode blue and white printed earthenwares and a wide variety of more ordinary wares made for domestic and export markets. Archives and valuable collections from factories of world prestige with over 200 years of history, are very rare. However, following the closure of Spode’s historic factory at Church Street, Stoke, where the collection had been located, much of the collection is presently in store and unavailable to public view. The Trustees are working with a number of parties to establish a new permanent home, hopefully in conserved historic buildings on the Spode Church Street site.

There are just 2 places left on this exciting workshop by HSL Pottery on the 13th September.

Expect a relaxed hands on session with plenty of laughs, a bit of creative chaos, and something you'll actually want to keep by the end. Perfect for a catch up, a solo switch-off, or just an excuse to try something new. All workshops will come with tea and cake.

Your piece will be fired afterwards and returned to the museum for collection a few weeks later.

This is a great opportunity, affordable monthly rent, no rates or utility bills, no upfront costs, and no capital expenditure - all the equipment is included. Want to know more details? Get in touch for an information leaflet.

We're pleased to share that we've now opened a tender for the café / tearoom at the Spode Museum, and we'd like to set out clearly what we're looking for.

The café / tearoom will be a daytime, family-friendly space - welcoming to visitors, families, dog-walkers, neighbours and everyone who enjoys this historic factory site in Stoke Town. It will serve barista coffee, fresh bakery and light lunches.

We have several meeting rooms and workshop spaces which often require corporate catering options. We also have an enclosed events space ‘The Secret Garden’ which can be used for evening events and performances.

The café / tearoom will be run by an independent operator, not by the Museum. The tender is open, and we welcome proposals from established operators and new entrants alike, including local businesses. Every bid will be assessed against the same criteria we are looking for as set out above.

As a small, independent charity caring for an internationally significant collection of ceramics everything we earn goes back into keeping our museum open and free to visit. We're looking for an operator who wants to work with us to make our museum thrive.

Operators interested in finding out more, or making a declaration of interest, can contact the museum directly or via messages.
