Our response to the King's Speech

Responding to the King’s Speech, John O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:

“Taxpayers will struggle to see the government’s legislative agenda as either ambitious or a break with the status quo.

“With frontline services continuing to falter and the tax burden hurtling towards a record high, the government seems to be more interested in expanding the quangocracy, pushing forward with nationalisation, and ignoring the ballooning welfare bill.

“This government’s programme wallows in the mire of mediocrity and perfectly encapsulates Keir Starmer’s time in office. Taxpayers deserve better.”

Responding to the introduction of an overnight visitors levy, Darwin Friend, research director of the TaxPayer’s Alliance said:

“Taxpayers will be dismayed to see that Mayors and unitary councils will be able to make family holidays more expensive.

“At a time when households are already struggling with the cost of living, piling extra charges onto overnight stays risks damaging tourism, hurting hospitality businesses and pricing more families out of taking a well deserved staycation.

“Instead of hammering holiday makers, the government should scrap these reforms before they do further damage to the sector.”"

Remember the post I did a few days ago about a pub giving customers lifts home in exchange for a charitable donation? 🤔

The story continues, as Katie Lam MP writes the below letter to the local authority! 📝

I will be VERY interested to see how this plays out, as solving this utter nonsense part of regulations could pave the way for significantly safer roads! 🛣️🚏🚸

Imagine a world where rural landlords are able to offer their customers safe lifts home…

Stamping out drink driving and ensuring people actually get home safely in one fell swoop! ❤️

🚕 We’re not wanting to replace taxis…

❌ We’re simple wanting to pick up the baton in our rural areas; areas which taxis refuse to service!

I will be watching this one with interest! 🤞

WHAT DO YOU THINK? 👇👇👇
Should pubs be allowed to give their customers a lift home? For free or for a charitable donation? Let me know your thoughts below!

Excellent news.

Another complete U-turn from this deeply flawed government—this time abandoning its plans to cancel 30 local elections after receiving legal advice.

No government, and no local authority, should have the power to cancel local elections except in the most extreme circumstances. “Reorganisation” is plainly not one of them. Credit is due to those who challenged and opposed this proposal from the outset. Anyone with a shred of common sense can see this for what it is: a government at rock bottom, running scared of the ballot box.

The inevitable question is how much taxpayers’ money has been wasted in the process. We already know the government faces at least £100,000 in costs linked to Reform’s legal action alone—an absurd and entirely avoidable expense caused by sheer political incompetence.

Perhaps the next U-turn should be the abandonment of these recklessly rushed reorganisation plans altogether. Ministers have now been forced to acknowledge what critics said from the start: they will not save money and will, in fact, impose significant short-term costs.

Only this government could identify a genuine issue—the cost of local government—commission a technocratic blueprint from consultants (PWC) and then attempt to implement it with such staggering incompetence.

Next U-turn, please.

We've written to Steve Reed MP to demand that he introduce legislation to strip local authorities, which are delaying elections, of the power to increase tax rates for the upcoming financial year.

No taxation without representation!
