Hunters Hill College, a building already recorded on our database has become the focus of a major emergency response after a significant fire tore through the former college site in Blackwell, Worcestershire.

The blaze, saw 12 fire crews called to the scene, with firefighters battling flames and thick black smoke well into the following day. The incident was serious enough to force the closure of nearby Blackwell First School due to concerns over air quality, while residents were advised to keep their windows and doors shut.

No cause has been confirmed as to why this fire started and there is no indication from authorities that foul play was involved as of yet. However, whenever a large fire occurs at a vacant building, speculation inevitably follows. Disused sites can be particularly vulnerable to vandalism, trespassing, accidental ignition, electrical faults or deliberate fire setting.

Its closure left behind a substantial vacant complex, and like many former educational buildings across the UK, questions have been raised about its future. Vacant buildings often face increasing risks over time, whether through deterioration, neglect, unauthorised access or incidents such as the fire.

At Land Hero our mission is to document and preserve the stories of places that matter to local communities, particularly those where the future may be uncertain.

Good news, home ownership is still affordable! You just need 7.6 people to buy it together.

Did you know that average house prices are now around 7.6 times average earnings? Which means if you’re a single parent looking to buy a home you could find another 6 adults to share the house with to make it very affordable!

Ridiculous? Yes, yet that’s what the maths is suggesting.

The gap between incomes and house prices has grown so wide in previous years to know that many full-time working people are being priced out of the market and the possibility of ownership altogether. Many single parents in particular are finding it increasingly difficult to provide appropriate and comfortable shelter for their children.

That’s why at the UK Single Family Housing Conference brought together important conversations between investors, developers, housing providers, operators and industry leaders to discuss the challenges of housing supply, planning reform, affordability, land availability and the future of residential development. All these discussions are vital in addressing the increasing need for affordable housing in the UK and helping to in future minimise the adverse effects of high housing prices such as increased homelessness and poverty rates.

It’s all about creating housing solutions that work for the people trying to live with them, because ‘just find another six people’ isn’t a housing strategy.
