Today was difficult. I’m still struggling to put into words what I saw in Stourbridge.

I met people, alongside Andy Burnham and Cat Eccles MP, who had watched their homes burn. People who had left with very little and now find their lives turned upside down.

But, in the middle of all that devastation, I felt some pride too.

Neighbours looking after neighbours. People opening their doors. A sea of donations arriving because people saw what was happening and simply wanted to help their community.

I met firefighters who had put themselves in harm’s way to protect people and their homes. Police, ambulance crews, council staff, councillors and volunteers who worked through the night and were still there today.

That is what I’ll remember.

The devastation is utterly heartbreaking. But the strength of the people I met was remarkable.

There will be very difficult days ahead for families who have lost so much. We will all be there for them.

And to everyone who ran towards danger, opened a door, donated something or helped a stranger - thank you!

I’m incredibly proud of this place and its people tonight.

Decades of decline have left our high streets unrecognisable.

That’s not on. So Labour is giving councils the power they need to bring town centres back to life - including a crackdown on v**e and betting shops that often do little to serve local communities.

Almost 1 in 10.

That’s how many Reform UK councillors have been lost since last year’s local elections.

Around 68 people gone in just 12 months. Some quit. Some defected. Some were suspended or expelled.

For a party that said it was ready to run councils across the country, that’s not a great sign.

They’ve had so many reasons to walk away…

👉 Councillors saying they were basically told to fall in line behind Nigel Farage instead of speaking up for their communities

👉 People walking away because decisions were being dictated “from above” rather than made locally

👉 Others saying the party had lost its identity and was turning into “Tory 2.0”

👉 Councillors being asked to vote for things they didn’t agree with. Tax rises, big spending decisions, budgets they hadn’t even been properly briefed on

👉 Internal rows, pressure, and a lack of support once the reality of running councils kicked in, such as in Kent where their leader told cabinet members to “f£$king suck it up”

👉 And in some cases… candidates being suspended or kicked out altogether for bad behaviour, including offensive and racist posts online

This isn’t just politics as usual. It’s what happens when a party grows quickly without the structure, experience, or standards to hold it together.

And it matters, because there’s a cost to you as taxpayers each time it happens.

Here’s what you’re actually voting for this week 👇

🗳️ Your local council
🗳️ The Welsh Senedd
🗳️ The Scottish Parliament

This is about:
✔️ Schools
✔️ Social care
✔️ Roads and bins
✔️ Housing
✔️ Local budgets

It is NOT about:
❌ “Stopping the boats”
❌ Immigration policy
❌ National headline-grabbing issues

Councillors don’t control any of that.

So when you see the slogans and the noise this week, just remember:

You’re not voting for who shouts the loudest on national issues.

You’re voting for who can actually run your local services.

And nearly 1 in 10 of them have already walked away after seeing what that really involves.

Today’s Labour’s Renters Rights Act will mean a new era for 23,085 renters in Dudley.

✅ New protections against no fault evictions

✅ New protections against discrimination

✅ More rights at home

✅ Stronger enforcement powers to make sure landlords play by the rules.

That’s Labour delivering for you

Dear Wordsley North Resident,

LOCAL ELECTION on Thursday 7th May - a personal message from Keith Archer

After working hard as a councillor on your behalf for the last 2 years Keith is again asking for your vote on Thursday 7th May.

It has not been an easy 2 years with Dudley Council controlled by the Tory Party with the help and support of the Liberal Democrats making over £42m savings this year involving deep cuts to services which our group opposed. We have done our best to hold the administration to account. Keith has played his part as vice chair of the Overview & Scrutiny Committee.

Keith says "my first priority has always been Wordsley North. I have lived in the area for 45 years, volunteering as a school governor for most of that time and I count many of you as friends and neighbours. It is where my wife and I have raised our family and we wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

I support many local groups such as the Friends of Wordsley Parks and our local Greenbelt Protection Groups. I attend as many local events and meetings as possible. I support local businesses, voluntary organisations, our schools, our library, community centre and GP Practice. I do all I can to help and promote what they do for our community. A lot has been achieved but there is always more to do.

I have helped many residents with various issues on an individual basis with pothole repairs, fly-tipping, housing issues, bin collection issues, arguments for free car parking, bus routes, keeping leisure centres in the public realm and a whole lot more. I have been available and aproachable through advice surgeries, email and social media.

I have always been willing to work with my fellow councillors, whatever their political colour, for the benefit of all residents.

Of course there are many difficult national issues and, after 14 years of Tory failure, issues such as the cost of living and hollowed out public services will take time to improve, especially against a background of wars in Europe and the Middle East. I recognise people are impatient for change, I am too. A good start has been made by the government with many positive policies but it has to be admitted mistakes have been made.

However, this election is NOT a vote about Westminster. This is a LOCAL election when you have the opportunity to decide who will represent Wordsley North on Dudley Council.

There are a number of parties contesting this seat and you may be tempted to cast a vote for one of them as a protest against the government. My real concern is that if enough of you do this there is the possibility that Reform UK Ltd. could win here with crazy, unrealistic promises even though the majority of you, like me, probably oppose their policies and their leader's admiration for Presidents Trump and Putin, his belief that the NHS should be converted to a privatised insurance-led service and his recruitment of a host of failed right-wing Tory MPs. When casting your vote please bear in mind the mess Reform are making when they have gained control of councils up and down the country, including some in the midlands!

My clear message is that if you want to stop Reform winning here and want to vote for hope over hatred and unity over division I ask you to lend your vote to me on this occasion. A vote for anyone else will only help Reform.

I will always put Wordsley and the High Acres first. I won't let you down."
