Spotted in the Walled Garden.

This is the spectacular caterpillar of the privet hawk-moth (Sphinx ligustri), the UK's largest resident moth species. With its vivid green body, purple-and-white stripes and impressive size, it's hard to miss. After feeding through the summer, it will pupate underground over winter before emerging as a stunning hawk-moth with a wingspan that can reach up to 12cm.

Did you know? Hawk-moth caterpillars have a characteristic tail horn. These may look sharp, but they're actually soft and harmless.
