Welcome Here teams up again with the Big Picture Festival. This film was chosen on the suggestion of refugees from Sudan currently living in Stratford.

Big Picture Film Festival programme announcement: You Will Die at Twenty

A hauntingly beautiful coming-of-age story from Sudan, You Will Die at Twenty follows Muzamil, whose life is shaped by a prophecy that he will die on his twentieth birthday. As that day draws near, he faces a life-changing choice: accept his fate, or dare to live.

Acclaimed around the world, the film was Sudan's first-ever Academy Awards submission and earned director Amjad Abu Alala the Lion of the Future Award for Best Debut Film at the Venice Film Festival.

Presented in partnership with Stratford Welcome Here, this special screening aims to amplify Sudanese voices, foster understanding of Sudanese migrant communities and shine a light on the ongoing humanitarian crisis and displacement caused by the "forgotten war" in Sudan.

Many thanks to everyone who helped to organise events for Refugee Week 2026 in Stratford. This year saw our biggest programme yet, with a workshop organised by Brook Arts Hub, Stories of Courage - hearing from local refugees, a showing of the film A World Not Ours, and the final celebration of Welcome Here's 10th birthday. Hundreds enjoyed the events - so thanks to everyone who helped to make them happen.

15-21 June marked which is the world's largest arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions and resilience of refugees, who have been forced to flee their home and seek Refuge. I joined Welcome Here: Stratford-upon-Avon in celebrating their 10th birthday and 10 years of supporting and welcoming refugees, including from Syria and Ukraine. A joyous occasion.
