This is a beautiful testimony to the value of kinship carers from actor Brian Cox, to mark Kinship Care Week 2026.

A heartfelt thank you to our many wonderful connected carers in Trafford who have stepped up to provide children in their families with stable and loving homes ❤️

This , award-winning Scottish actor and director Brian Cox, who was raised in kinship care by his sister, shows his support for kinship carers and our Kinship Community. 💛

"I was raised by my sister where I grew up in Dundee. I was able to grow up with people who already knew me and loved me. I cherished my sister with all my heart.

"This Kinship Care Week, alongside the charity Kinship, we're celebrating the unbreakable bonds at the heart of kinship families – and the communities they build to support one another - while highlighting the realities of stepping up to care for a child who has had a difficult start in life.

“From that unplanned moment, kinship carers take on everything - the ongoing responsibility, the financial and emotional pressure, the daily care, love and emotional rewards of sudden parenthood. Their lives change overnight from being a relative to becoming full-time parents with little notice. Every kinship carer’s story is different. But they are all driven by the same reason: the love that they have for their child."

We want to thank Brian Cox for so generously sharing his personal experience, as well as his continued support using his platform to raise awareness of kinship families. 💛

If you are a kinship carer, please join our Kinship Community where you will have access to a wide range of support, information and advice - as well as the chance to connect with other kinship carers sharing their stories and experiences: https://loom.ly/O4xSOWA ✅

This week the government has launched a national campaign to recruit more foster carers, so expect to see lots in the media over the coming weeks about fostering, and the huge difference it can make.

We have an exceptional community of foster carers in Trafford, but we do need more people to join them and offer a loving home to children who really need support. If you've ever thought about becoming a foster carer, we would love to talk you through the different types of fostering and how it could work for you.

As one of our foster carers said recently: "It’s been hard work but very rewarding, with lots of ups and downs but to be honest it’s mainly been ups and we wouldn't change a thing!"

From allegations to annual reviews, checks and references, we offer information and advice on a range of key practice issues for fostering services.

So proud of all our Trafford Foster Carers, all round great people doing an incredible job for children and young people in Trafford.

Thanks to everyone who came to our Foster Carer Celebration earlier this month and made it such a special event ❤️

Thank you to Trafford’s amazing foster carers.

More than 80 foster carers came together at Hotel Football for a special celebration recognising the incredible difference they make to the lives of children and young people across Trafford.

The event honoured carers marking milestones of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years of fostering, and featured inspiring contributions from care-experienced speaker Esther Grace and members of Trafford’s fostering community.

As Foster Carer Lawrence Herron, recognised alongside his wife Tracy for 10 years of fostering, said: “It’s been hard work but very rewarding.. we wouldn’t change a thing.”

If you care for a young person aged 16+ this excellent opportunity could be of interest. Construction Cares has been a great success to date, teaching practical DIY skills and opening doors to career options for cared experienced young people. Read more below 👇

A practical construction skills course is creating opportunities and changing futures for young people in Trafford who have grown up in the care system.

Constructions Cares is a three-day course giving care experienced young people a taste of a range of skills, including plumbing, tiling, electrics, painting and decorating and joinery.

The initiative was developed by GMI Construction in partnership with Trafford & Stockport College Group and Trafford Council, with the aim of inspiring young care leavers to consider different career options, and to equip them with DIY skills to use in their own homes.

Last month lots of Trafford foster families - 44 households in fact! - took up the invitation from our fostering service to enjoy a day out together at Gulliver's World in Warrington. By all accounts a fun time was had by all - and as ever it was a lovely opportunity for families who foster to meet up and spend some time together. Thanks to the organisers for all the work that went into making it a successful event 🙂

"After retiring in 2024, Vera decided that a quiet retirement was not for her."

A really nice piece about a former teacher who became a respite foster carer for her local council after 36 years in the classroom.

"The good thing is that I control my own timing, so I do respite when I am fully available to do everything I can to make children happy, safe and secure."

For anyone considering becoming a foster carer, Vera's advice is simple: focus on the child and the difference you can make.

There's a wide range of support in Trafford for neurodivergent children but it can sometimes be difficult to know where to start, or what's out there for your particular situation. These new Neurodiversity Navigators are here to help parents and carers find their way around the system, and access any support your child or young person may need 👇

Families in Trafford who have children with ADHD, autism and other neurodivergent conditions can now access support more easily thanks to the launch of a new service in the borough.
