Skaill House

Skaill House Skaill House is the finest mansion in Orkney steeped in 5000 years of history. The house is open to the public from April until October..

It stands imposingly on the Atlantic coast of Orkney and just 200m from the world famous Neolithic village of Skara Brae. The house is surrounded by spacious lawned gardens in a beautiful secluded spot between the sea and the Loch of Skaill. Skaill House was built in 1620 and in its 400 year history all 12 of its Lairds have been related and all have contributed to the history and collection in th

e house. The first owner was Bishop George Graham (Bishop of Orkney 1615-1638) who built the house on the site of a farmstead thought to date to the Norse period. Also notable was the7th Laird William Graham Watt who discovered Skara Brae in 1850. Visitors to Skaill House can explore the family home and the artefacts collected by the family since the 17th Century. The collection includes artefacts related to Skara Brae, an unusually Norse calendar stick and a dinner service used by the explorer Captain James Cook on his 3rd and final voyage. A visit to Skaill House and Skara Brae will give you a valuable insight into Orkney’s diverse and exciting past. Today Skaill House is one of Orkney’s top tourist attractions and is included as a joint ticket with Skara Brae. Skaill House is open to the public from April to September. The house is also available all year for weddings and private functions. In the North Wing of Skaill House there are also two apartments available as holiday accommodation. Skaill House is ideally situated on the stunning Orkney coastline and is an excellent base for exploring Orkney, 6 miles from Stromness and 16 miles from Kirkwall.

Did you know where the story of Skara Brae began?

There’s something powerful about an ordinary moment turning extraordinary.

After the storm of 1850, the 7th Laird of Breckness Willie Watt went on his daily walk expecting the usual a huge deposit of seaweed in Skaill Bay or perhaps if he was lucky something interesting washed ashore.

Instead, the sand had shifted…
And beneath his feet lay a village untouched for 5,000 years.

Skara Brae wasn’t discovered by archaeologists. It was discovered by someone simply going about his morning.

Something is coming to Skaill House…

Ancient secrets. Hidden alliances. A game where trust is everything…. until it isn’t.

We couldn’t think of a more fitting stage than a place shaped by stories, storms and centuries of mystery.

The Traitors comes to Skaill House.

Launching this autumn on BBC One.

Would you make it as a Faithful… or a Traitor?

A lovely trip out to Barony Mill yesterday ahead of our preseason training. What an amazing asset to have on Orkney. It was great to see how the mill works and that the Beremeal it produces is in such high demand here and across the globe. At 150 plus years of age she is still putting in a shift and the enthusiasm of Ali, the miller and the rest of the team will no doubt keep it in good shape long into the future. On behalf of all the team, thank you for a lovely visit and we can't wait to have your wonderful products back in our shop this season.

Date for your diary — Saturday 28th March 2026, 10am - 4pm

We’re opening the doors of Skaill House for a special Open Day with free entry for everyone.

After a busy winter behind the scenes, we’re excited to welcome you back before the season officially begins on the 1st of April.

As always, our winter has been far from quiet. Our brilliant team has been hard at work protecting and restoring the house becoming part of the next chapter in the history of the Estate. Maintaining a house like Skaill sometimes feels a bit like painting the Forth Road Bridge, the work is never quite finished! But we love bringing it back to life each spring. It’s a like a daffodil pushing through after a wild winter.

If you know the house well, do come along and see if you can spot any changes.

The shop has a few new favourites too. This season we particularly like the beautiful ANTA Scotland bags, made from their distinctive 'Orkney' woven wool in natural black and white. They are hard to resist!

We look forward to welcoming you!

We’re delighted to share a brilliant new chapter for the wider Skaill family.

Ruaridh Waugh husband to our Custodian, Katie and his sister Kirsty have launched an exciting new arm to their family business Noble & Wild Venison. We would like to wish them the best of luck on this new venture. We’re proud supporters of family businesses and high quality food and drink, it’s very exciting to see this venture come to life.

Wild venison is one of the most sustainable red meats. With natural predators gone, deer populations are high, putting pressure on woodland, peatland and biodiversity.

Careful, ethical harvesting helps restore balance while providing clean, nutrient-rich meat. A regenerative choice for people and the planet.

For our local followers in Orkney you can order Noble & Wild Venison through Donaldsons of Orkney E Flett Butcher Ltd Williamsons Butchers thanks to Munro Butcher - Butchers and Wholesalers!

For our followers living in London or within the M25 you can mail order here: https://nobleandwild.com/
