What’s the impact of community support through Lucky Severn Lottery ? 💚

Stroud Women's Refuge is seeing a real difference, thanks to local players and Stroud District Council. Together, they’ve helped raise an incredible £5,355 to support this vital, independent charity. 👏

The funding is helping provide safe spaces for women and children experiencing domestic abuse, both in refuge accommodation and out in the community. It’s not just about keeping services running. It’s about being able to respond when people need support most, offering safety, stability and hope during some of the most difficult times in their lives.

As a charity rooted in Stroud district, Stroud Women’s Refuge is always working to adapt and grow its services to meet local needs. Having funding raised locally makes a big difference. It helps maintain continuity, develop new support, and shows that the community truly stands behind the work they do 🌿

Every ticket played through Lucky Severn Lottery is part of that support. It might seem small, but it adds up to something powerful, helping families access the support they need at crucial moments.

A huge thank you to everyone already supporting Stroud Women’s Refuge alongside Stroud District Council and Lucky Severn Lottery. Your support really does matter 💚

NEWS: Councillors unanimously approve funding to progress Stratford Park Lido reopening

Key elected decision-makers have unanimously approved additional funding to support the reopening of Stratford Park Lido this summer.

The decision by Stroud District Council’s Strategy and Resources Committee on Wednesday, 3 June follows a detailed project update setting out the latest cost plan, programme and technical requirements needed to safely bring the 90 year old facility back into operation.

All members of the committee from all four political groups (Green, Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat) agreed to allocate an additional £276,000, bringing the total project cost to £476,000, funding the essential works required to make the Lido safe, operational and compliant for public use.

The project builds on the initial £200,000 approved in April and reflects extensive technical assessments carried out with contractors and specialist consultants to fully scope the work required.

The approved funding will cover short-term repairs, enabling works and essential surveys to put the Lido in the best position it can be to reopen for summer 2026 and operate during the 2027 season, while longer-term options for the site continue to be developed.

However, reopening is not guaranteed, as delivery remains dependent on no additional issues being identified during works and no significant deterioration in the Lido’s condition over the winter period.

Based on the latest programme, works are currently scheduled to complete in time for a reopening on 14 August 2026, with the potential for an earlier opening date of 29 July, subject to progress on site.

Council Leader and Strategy and Resources Committee Chair Cllr Chloe Turner said after the meeting: "Our councillors considered this decision very carefully, because the funding required will have to be matched by savings elsewhere, so the debate was appropriately thorough.

“But ultimately it was a unanimous decision, which sends a very clear message. We have listened to our community loud and clear. People want to see their Lido open again.

“This is a complex project, and the detailed work carried out by our dedicated officers and industry experts over recent weeks has given us a much clearer understanding of what’s required.

“We are being honest about the challenges, but also confident that we now have a robust and deliverable plan in place.

“This funding allows us to get on with the job - carrying out essential repairs, making the site safe, and doing everything possible to welcome people back through the gates this summer.”

Alongside the current works, the surveys funded through this project will also help inform future decisions about the long-term operation and investment needed at the Lido.

The £476,000 revenue funding agreed is separate from a proposed £900,000 capital borrowing allocation for more significant long-term improvements, which would be subject to further approval.

Preparations are also underway to ensure the facility can operate safely once reopened, including staffing and lifeguard recruitment.

🌱 Creativity driving climate action in Stroud district

We’re proud to have supported `The Weight of Light' by Dialect - supporting rural writers through Stroud District Council’s Climate and Nature Fund.

Rooted in our local landscape, this inspiring project uses storytelling and imagination to explore hopeful responses to the climate crisis, connecting people more deeply to place and nature.

It’s already making a difference. The project has helped raise ecological awareness through powerful storytelling, strengthened community resilience, and created opportunities for local writers to share their voices. It’s also supported new creative networks and collaboration, while showing how place-based approaches can help people adapt to a changing climate.

More than that, it offers a model that could be applied in other areas facing similar challenges, showing how creativity can play a practical role in shaping a more sustainable future.

By supporting grassroots projects like this, we’re helping to build stronger connections between people, nature and climate, an important step towards lasting behaviour change 🌍✨

Our latest round of Climate & Nature grants has now closed - we'll be sharing their stories over the coming months.

Great to see ITV News West Country shining a spotlight on one of Stroud’s oldest and best loved traditions, Shambles Market, Stroud 🎉

Trading for more than 400 years, the Shambles has been at the heart of the town for generations. If you watch the full clip, you’ll spot stallholder Richard Bennett showing the original “shambles” – the wooden tables that gave the market its name.

While the 400th anniversary exhibition has now finished, the market itself is very much still here and thriving. You’ll find it every Friday and Saturday, both outdoors and on Saturdays also in the Church Hall, with a wide mix of food, crafts and unique finds from local traders.

It’s a place full of stories, character and community spirit – and well worth a visit.

What’s helping keep Fretherne St Mary Church open and welcoming? ⛪✨

A steady boost from Lucky Severn Lottery supporters is making a real difference behind the scenes.

Fretherne St Mary’s provides a much loved and valued service for the Severnside community. The church building itself is a little gem, often described as the “mini cathedral in the Severn Vale” 💚

You can't miss the scaffolding up around the church in this photo. These are much needed repairs made possible by a successful National Lottery Heritage Fund grant. While the grant covers a significant part of the work, the church still needs to contribute its own funds.

That’s where support like the Lucky Severn Lottery comes in. Thanks to players choosing the church as their good cause, it’s on track to raise around £797 this year. That regular income helps cover essential costs like insurance. It might not sound exciting, but it’s vital. Without it, the building couldn’t stay open to the public.

In a roundabout way, those small weekly contributions are also helping unlock bigger improvements like these repairs. Having a reliable income stream means the church can contribute towards projects and keep moving forward.

It also frees up funds for smaller but meaningful changes, like switching from halogen to energy efficient LED lighting 💡 A simple step that reduces energy use and supports the church’s journey towards net zero.

All of this helps ensure people can continue to visit, take part in community life and enjoy this special space at the heart of the village 🌿

It’s a great example of how small, regular contributions can quietly keep important community spaces running, while also supporting positive change.

A big thank you to everyone already supporting Fretherne St Mary Church through Lucky Severn Lottery 👏

What a special day to remember 🎉

On 16 May, local veterans enjoyed a truly memorable trip to the annual The Not Forgotten Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, and the photos say it all.

Cllr Paul Turner, one of our three Armed Forces Champions, helped make this happen by securing 40 invitations through The Not Forgotten, a fantastic organisation that supports the armed forces community all year round. Our Armed Forces Champions regularly meet with local veterans to make sure their needs are heard and supported.

With additional support from Stroud District Council towards the coach, veterans were able to travel together to London in comfort. The result was a day filled with pride, connection and well deserved recognition, with many later sharing how valued and remembered they felt. Moments like this can make a real difference to wellbeing, and it’s wonderful to see.

Many thanks to the veterans who kindly allowed us to share their photos. If you’re a veteran, or know one, do you attend a local breakfast club or group? These are brilliant, supportive organisations run by people who share your experiences and understand your banter (there's a list on our website).

A huge thank you to The Not Forgotten for everything they do, and to everyone who helped make the trip possible 💙

We’re proud to continue supporting our armed forces community, including at this year’s only official Armed Forces Day event that we’re hosting at Stratford Park:

📅 Saturday 27 June
⏰ 10am to 4.30pm
📍 Stratford Park, Stroud
🎟️ Free entry

The day is all about showing support for serving personnel, veterans and their families while bringing the community together for a family friendly day out. There’ll be entertainment, activities for all ages, and the chance to meet local veterans’ organisations, emergency services and charities, all in the district's largest public park.

Confirmed attractions include performances from the Innsworth Military Wives Choir, the Cheltenham Pipe Band and Jim’s Jive, along with a wide range of stalls and displays from veterans’ groups, the Armed Forces, emergency services, Scouts and Cadets and more.

We’re supporting the event with funding, the park as the venue, and officer support for publicity and logistics.
