Illegal E-Bike Enforcement Operation

Seven illegally modified electric bikes have been seized following a joint operation involving Sunderland City Council's Community Safety Team, Northumbria Police and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

One of the bikes was recorded travelling at 46mph during the operation.

The enforcement activity took place in Sunderland City Centre and Roker Retail Park, targeting bikes that do not comply with legal Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) regulations.

A bike that had been left secured with a lock was also seized during the operation. After a male returned and saw officers inspecting the bike, he left the area. Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service attended to remove the lock so the bike could be recovered.

Through partnership working, agencies are helping to improve road safety, tackle dangerous and illegal bike use, and keep Sunderland safe for everyone.

The SAIL Community Safety Team attended Sunderland, UK City Hall this week as part of the Mackem Community launch!

It was great to see so many local organisations get together and provide a space for residents to access help, advice and essential support all in one place!
