This means a lot: better mental health help for Sunderland.

No one should have to wait months to get help with their mental health.

Labour will create 100 new mental health centres across England, so people can get help closer to home and much faster.

There will also be 59 special emergency centres to help people who are in crisis get support on the same day.

Labour is making mental health a priority: more help, less waiting and closer to home.

Sunderland is a Music City.

Our grassroots music and performance venues are a vital part of what makes Sunderland unique.

That's why it's fantastic to see North East Mayor Kim McGuinness- North East Mayor launch the Mayor's Small Venues Fund: a £2.2 million investment to support grassroots music, arts, comedy and performance venues across our region.

With grants of £3,000 to £100,000 available, this funding will help venues meet rising costs, keep their doors open, protect local jobs, and continue bringing live entertainment to our communities.

This is exactly the kind of investment our region needs. It shows a real commitment from our Labour Mayor to supporting culture, creativity and local venues.

By backing our small venues today, we're helping to secure a vibrant future for Sunderland and the wider North East.

So many residents of Sunderland are concerned about our coastline. We need the Council leadership to urgently push for more action and work in partnership with other agencies to deliver a proper urgent clean-up. Volunteers cannot tackle this alone.

People keep asking:

Why are there still nurdles on our beaches?

Why do other beaches have more people cleaning them than ours?

The next week is critical.

Every tide and every gust of wind spreads these plastic pellets further, making the clean-up harder and putting more wildlife at risk.

Other areas have acted quickly.

So why is Sunderland different?

I am old enough to remember walking through the city centre on a match day 20 years ago. We've come a long way since then because we chose to invest in Sunderland.

Reform's mixed messaging says it all. One minute they're talking down our city and calling regeneration, including Culture House, a vanity project. The next they're saying they support investment. Which is it?

Blaming Labour isn't a policy. Regeneration in Sunderland has been long overdue, and Labour will always back investment that makes our city a better place to live, work and visit.

Sunderland is worth believing in.

Culture House opens on **Saturday 12 September 2026** bringing a world-class library, exhibitions, immersive experiences, creative technology and a fantastic new space for everyone to enjoy.

Labour had the vision to make this happen. Seeing that vision become a reality is something our city should celebrate.

But at the site visit, where it is a councillor's job to ask questions and see how taxpayers' money is being spent, Reform councillors on the Economic Prosperity Scrutiny Committee didn't turn up.

It's easy to criticise from the sidelines. Delivering for Sunderland takes work.

A couple taking the bus to travel to work and back can save around £40 a month. That's real value for working families.
