607 Wearmouth Squadron Air Cadets

We are a local unit of the Royal Air Force Air Cadet Organisation, based in Sunderland. We parade Tuesday and Friday evenings.

We are open to young people in Year 8, at school, and above. The Royal Air Force Air Cadets are sponsored by the Royal Air Force and give you hands-on experience of activities and courses that will challenge and develop your skills to help you succeed in any walk of life. The aims of the Royal Air Force Cadets are to;

promote and encourage a practical interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force

among young people;
provide training which will be useful in the Services and civilian life;
encourage the spirit of adventure; and
develop qualities of leadership and good citizenship

607 (Wearmouth) Squadron is based in Seaburn, Sunderland and is one of 35 Air Cadet Squadrons in Durham/Northumberland Wing which covers most of the North East of England. As a unit we meet at our headquarters on a Tuesday and Friday evenings each week, we also offer a range of weekend trips and activities, aswell as week long residential camps around the UK and abroad.

🌟Wing DofE Award Completions🌟

It's been a bumper month for DofE award completions, with 10 Bronze awards and 2 Silver awards achieved by cadets across the Wing!

Well done to the cadets from 224 (Hexham) Air Cadets 234 (City of Durham) Squadron ATC 607 Wearmouth Squadron Air Cadets 1027 Jarrow Squadron ATC 1114 Gosforth Squadron 1507 (Chester-le-Street) Squadron 1801 Alnwick Squadron RAF Air Cadets and 2344 (Longbenton) Air Cadet Squadron who have achieved Bronze, and to the cadets from Blaydon Air Cadets and 2505 - Bishop Auckland Squadron - Royal Air Force Air Cadets who have completed Silver!

🥾 Bronze DofE Practice Expedition 🥾

This weekend, our cadets took part in their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award practice expedition, developing the skills and confidence needed ahead of their assessed expedition.

Working alongside cadets from 1338 (Seaham) Squadron ATC, day one saw the group complete a guided route, learning and putting into practice key navigation techniques while building their confidence in route planning and map reading. After a full day on the move, the cadets set up tents and cooked their own evening meals, developing their camping and self-sufficiency skills.

On day two, the cadets split into two teams and took responsibility for the expedition themselves. From navigating the route and managing the team, to ensuring they had everything they needed throughout the day, they demonstrated excellent teamwork and resilience as they completed the challenge independently.

All of the photographs in this post were taken by one of the expedition teams themselves on a digital camera, capturing the experience from the cadets’ perspective as they progressed through the weekend.

Well done to all the cadets from both squadrons for embracing the challenges of expedition life and putting their training into practice. We look forward to seeing them take on their assessed expedition soon!

♻️ BANK HOLIDAY LITTER PICK ♻️

Following the May Bank Holiday weekend, cadets and staff from the Squadron headed to Seaburn Beach to help tidy up the coastline and remove litter left behind by visitors.

Armed with our litter picking equipment kindly funded by , the team spent the evening collecting rubbish from the beach and surrounding areas, helping to keep our local environment clean and safe for everyone to enjoy.

Community activities like this are a great way for our cadets to give back to the local area while developing teamwork and a sense of responsibility.

A big thank you to all of our cadets who gave up their time to make a positive difference in the community!

🏃‍♂️ WING ATHLETICS COMPETITION 🏃‍♀️

Last weekend, 14 of our cadets represented the squadron at the Wing Athletics Competition, competing against cadets from across the Wing in a range of track and field events.

Our cadets put in an excellent performance throughout the day, finishing 7th overall, whilst also achieving 3rd place in the Junior Men's Team competition 🥉 and 5th place in the Junior Women's Team competition.

A fantastic effort from everyone who took part, showing great determination, teamwork, and squadron spirit. Well done to all involved for representing the squadron so well!

🌲 AT CHALLENGE 🌲

Some of our cadets represented the squadron at the recent Wing Adventure Training Challenge! Throughout the weekend they competed in a range of activities including orienteering, first aid, mountain biking, and archery.

The team put in a brilliant effort across all events and represented the squadron exceptionally well throughout the competition 👏

A great weekend of teamwork, resilience, and pushing themselves outside their comfort zones. Well done to everyone who took part!

We’d also like to say a big thank you to 1338 (Seaham) Squadron for assisting with transport for the event.

✈️ AIR EXPERIENCE FLYING ✈️

Last week, three of our cadets travelled to RAF Leeming for an Air Experience Flying day, giving them the opportunity to get hands-on with flying and experience life around military aviation.

Before taking to the skies, cadets covered aircraft kitting and equipment, completed simulated drills, and learnt some of the theory behind flight and aircraft operations. Once airborne, each cadet had the chance to take control of the aircraft and experience flying first-hand under the guidance of RAF pilots.

The aircraft used for Air Experience Flying are also utilised within the RAF’s initial flying training pipeline, giving cadets a genuine insight into the early stages of military flying training and aviation operations.

A brilliant opportunity for our cadets to build confidence, knowledge, and experience in aviation!

🎯 L98 RANGE DAY 🎯

Cadets from the squadron recently travelled to RAF Boulmer to take part in a squadron L98 range day. It proved a fantastic opportunity for cadets to develop their shooting skills, build confidence on the range, and work towards their marksmanship classifications.

While opportunities like this are more commonly delivered at Wing level, thanks to the hard work and commitment of the squadron staff, our cadets were able to benefit from a dedicated day focused on coaching, progression, and experience in a live range environment.

🎯 SQUADRON RANGE NIGHT 🎯

Cadets were out on our range this week for an L144 introductory shoot, focusing on building confidence and understanding the fundamentals of marksmanship.

Under the guidance of Sgt Powell, CWO Button took on a coaching role on the range. As our newly appointed SATT Cadet, she supported cadets on the firing point and helped reinforce the basics. It was great to see peer-led instruction in action, with progress made by all cadets in the session.

A solid evening developing core skills and setting the foundation for future range days.

🌲 INTER-SQUADRON CROSS COUNTRY 🌲

Cadets from the squadron recently took part in the Inter-Squadron Cross-Country Competition, held at Rising Sun Country Park.

Competing across four of the five categories, our cadets showed great determination and teamwork throughout a challenging course.

A standout achievement came from our Under 15 Girls Team, who won the overall best team award based on their combined performance across the category 🏆

A fantastic result and a great reflection of the effort put in by everyone involved — well done to all who took part! 👏

Over the past two years, we’ve been incredibly grateful for the continued support of Esh Group, a North East based civil engineering group, who have generously donated a number of their end-of-service laptops to the squadron.

While no longer required by Esh Group, these laptops have been used almost every single parade night and supported young people across Durham and Northumberland gaining meaningful qualifications in Cyber, STEM, and Space, as well as assisting in studies around the RAF and RAFAC.

A sincere thank you to Esh Group for this support - it’s made a real difference to the opportunities we can provide the next generation.
